I was riding my 2004 blaster today . I was at the top of the 2nd gear and when I changed gears I accidentally down shifted into 1st without holding the clutch. It made a lot of noise then I heard more noise like something rattling in the crankcase as I stopped. Then it immediately shut off on me . I tried to crank it up but no luck . I then removed the crank case cover on the left side of my blaster. The nut in the middle of the that spinning circle was loose so I tightened it up. Put back on the crank case cover. Since I did that it WILL start . It will only start if I have the choke open . Then it will only stay running ( very loud) if I'm pushing the gas throttle all the way. It will not idle . If I don't push the throttle It dies. When I put it in first gear I goes really really really slow (very quiet ) like the engine is trying to give up. And as soon as you release the throttle. It DIES. I went and bought a new spark plug and it is still doing the same thing.

woodruff key broke
flywheel in spinning out of time:D

time to get a ten dollar flywheel puller and inspect/replace key perhaps lap crankshaft
the key is like 3 bucks

around 10:40min is a explanation

Thanks . I'm ordered the parts today. I will post my results after I install . Thanks guys I hope this works

Hey, not to hijack your thread, but would it be possible to shear this key on a failed 2nd gear holeshot? It made the same sounds and now wont start... I havent checked the flywheel nut yet.

well better to hear that than thinking i sheared second gear and messed up some serious stuff. Ill pull the flywheel, replace the key, and try my hand at lapping

The taper between the crank and the flywheel is what holds it together. The key is just for timing alignment. The nut at the proper torque specs keeps the flywheel in contact with the crank.

Be sure to get all of the lapping compound off of both surfaces after the lapping is complete. Don't want any leftover abrasive materials inside your flywheel.

You guys were right. My blaster is running excellent after I changed the woodruff key. Thanks fellas
