I'm a newb with ATV's and purchased an 01 Blaster for cheap. The owner said there's a cracked engine/ trans cover that needs replaced due to the chain breaking and hitting the case. Is this an easy fix?? I found some parts on ebay, if your have a chance please check out this item #150367862971 and let me know if its what I need. I appreciate everyones help.

Welcome to Blaster Forum! I'm glad you found yourself a good deal on a used Blaster. They are so much fun to ride. Of course, it has to be made rideable first. :(

Even though this really isn't the place to post such a question, here's an answer for you. It's all good. I'm always learning every day myself. I:I

If the chain did indeed come off and punched a hole in the engine case, as the seller said, I don't have much in the way of good news. The damaged case half will have to be repaired or replaced, which entails tearing down the entire bottom end of the engine to gain access to the case half. Even if the damage can be temporarily repaired with some JB Weld, without removing anyting, there is a good chance that some metal shavings or pieces may have fallen into the engine. Any metal shavings left inside will promptly wreck a bearing.

However, you have options. A complete replacement bottom end that's ready to bolt in can be found for $ 100.00 or so on ebay. This is a very cost-effective fix, plus you'll have some spare parts to boot. You could also just buy a new LH case half, but this is a MAJOR repair for somebody new to ATV's. No offense, of course. Suggestion: Get yourself a Clymer or Hanes manual if possible. This is the best tool you'll have when you go to war or play with a Blaster.

rep +1 very very well said take his advice

Ok. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting twice in a row. Lol. Somebody feel free to straighten me out if needed!

Anywho, I said 'if indeed' in my last post, because your Blaster may suffer from another, simpler problem. If the hole is in the RH engine cover, below or beside the kick starter lever, it can be repaired pretty easily. This damage is often caused if the engine kicks back during starting. It will fire once, grab the kickstarter lever, and slam it right back into the engine cover, often breaking something. Hopefully that 'something' is not a leg.

If the RH cover is the only thing with a hole in it, and the chain is intact, you only need a new side cover and gasket, like the one you found on ebay. Pull and replace the cover with a fresh gasket, and you're done. I'd check the kickstarter while you're in there, as they are often damaged if the case has been broken in this fashion. Also, make sure that the flywheel key is intact, as the ignition timing may be off. Good luck!

Thanks for the help everyone and sorry I posted in the wrong section. The seller is pretty reputable and said it runs well, just leaks oil out. I sure hope its the lesser problem of the two!

If the Blaster runs well and just has an oil leak, the problem is likely only a cracked or broken RH crankcase cover. You'll have to take a good look at the quad to be sure, but if this is all that's wrong, I'd go ahead and get it. The new cover will run you all of $ 35.00 or so w/shipping on ebay, plus about $ 10.00 for a new gasket.

Take your money and run if the engine case is split or broken anywhere near the countershaft or drive sprocket. Like I said, this repair is a major pain in the ass. Remember, there is always a better deal out there. I got my '97 Blaster for $ 250.00 cash. It only has a blown jug gasket, so this ought to be an easy winter project. On the other hand, I spent $ 900.00 on another Blaster last spring that looked good and ran, but turned out to be trashed and worn-out. Lol. Live and learn.
