Corinth, Ms
ok i have a chance to buy a 2001 yamaha blaster tomoro for 400 bucks...guy is really needing cash he says...problem is that he said he put too much oil in the gas recently and now it wont run but was running fine before this..what do u guys think?? should i buy it or what?? really want a blaster but dnt want to get screwed either

take your own gallon of fresh fuel mixed with 4 ounces of good 2 stroke oil, drain his all out, including out of the carb and try starting it with your fuel,
check compression too.... wide open throttle and kick it till the needle stops.
anything close to or below 100 psi will need top end attention very soon.
120-130 psi being good compression

theres been way too many bogus excuses of why it won't start, when the owner knew it was blown

but...even still, if it's all intact, good tires and plastics, good bearings, and the motor turns over at least, it could still be worth $400, even needing rebuilt

some pics would help us help you determine that

The price is only good if the guy is telling the truth AND the quad is in good overall shape......but the too much oil scenario sounds fishy. Take some fresh gas and pre-mix over and see if you can get it to run. If the oil-injection is gone or disabled....which would be great....then pre-mix to 32:1 with some fresh premium gas. If it has the oil injection unit still intact and he isn't pre-mixing....then you know he's full of it.

^^^^^^ Looks like the guru beat me too it. Awk's advice is spot on....as always!

yours was equal, we'll call it a tag team effort !!!!!

and you stole my donation diamond ya prick, hahahahahahahaaaa

blaster.jpg here is one picture i think if it uploaded right

I didn't exactly set the donation bar too high.....so you BF cheap blastderds can still get the precious.....

looks just like mine did when i bought it, but i paid $700 and it blew up 2 days later

try the fresh fuel and compression test, and grab each tire and rock side to side to check for bearing play, and the swingarm at the pivot point
if that checks out, it's worth the $400
but.....if you don't have a few hundred to put into it, if it is fried, i'd pass and save up for a running one

also can get this one for 400 too but guy says this one will crank and run for just a min but when it does run it is really rough...said someone told him to replace the reeds or whatever...blaster 3.jpg

i'd also stand it on it's assend, and check the frame for bends right behind the lower/rear a-arm mounts, right where the frame starts to widen out, a known spot for bent frames

if it does not start after the fresh fuel, any bearings are bad...i'd pass
unless you wanna offer him like $200/250, and have some extra loot to throw at it
if your just looking to buy one with the only $400 you have right now, it's a gamble
if your gonna get to enjoy it for any length of time.

thanks awk really appreciate it...i have always wanted a blaster..i have two fourwheelers now but they are both 2010 big bear 450s and i just want a toy at the moment and for some reason blasters have always appealed to me but they seem like a hek of a lot of work and maintenance...would be new to the whole 2 stroke thing

like i said i really just want a toy and something to tinker around with but i dnt wanna have to mess with rebuilding a engine if i can help it lol

most excess maintenece and problems on blasters come from all the extra modding alot of us do
i had a brand new 96 back in the day
rode the hell out of it for over 8 years, and only ever replaced tires and chains
they can be just as reliable as the next quad with routine maintenence and oil changes
btw... a top end rebuild can be had for under $300, then good to go for years if taken care of

only if your prepared to drop a few more bucks on any problems that may arise.
would i buy it.....yep, i love building/fixing/modding these things

did u see the pic of the solid blue one i posted too??? it is 400 too and dude said it was running and will crank now but wont idle long and when it is running now it runs very rough but said he had the carb cleaned not to long ago

but on that 2001 model the black and white one..the guy said it was just running last week and then he did that with the oil...he told me on the phone that all id need to do is drain the gas and then it would be fine and im sure id replace the plug..thas assuming his word is good and all

like stated above...test his truthfulness, show up with your own mix and a few new plugs
