Gas tank foam?

i was told once, that it was to keep the fuel from sloshing around in the tank, to keep it on the petcock when doing big jumps and hard whoops while mx racing ?

Uhh idk what it is awks idea make sense but for that to take place I'm assuming it would thicken the gas maybe idk but I wouldn't want foam in aroumd or running through my fuel supply I don't think.

The fuel cells in our racecars all had it and it is in the airplanes I work on... I would think it would benefit flat track guys the most as it really does work at keeping the fuel from sloshing around. It also helps keep fuel spread evenly throughout the tank so you don't starve the petcock in a long high speed turn.

The older Briggs and Stratton 130000 model series engines with the metal fuel tank (intended for use on go-karts and minibikes) came stock with foam in the fuel tank for this exact reason. Its there to prevent sloshing and fuel starvation at certain angles.

In my experience, the foam works great until it gets eaten up by the gas. With today's corrosive fuel blends (Ethanol!), Id want to change out the tank foam every other year to be sure the gas doesn't break it apart and cause a clog at the fuel petcock. The foam in those Briggs engines usually lasts about 3 to 5 years, although when it breaks up, it tends to settle in the bottom of the tank and you can clean it out. Plus, those tanks are internally-baffled, so you can often continue to run them after the foam is gone.

I had a go-kart years ago that had a foam-filled tank. Just as others have said, it was great unit the foam dissolved. Never could get all the gremlins out of that fuel system after that....

It's to keep fuel from sloshing around.
The benifit is always having fuel to the petcot but also to stop the weight of the fuel sloshing around from affecting your ablity to go around corners.
The foam stops the gas from counter acting your leaning.
