So I was outside cleaning my frame up to get it ready for paint and decided to sand off some of the loose rust. Before I realized it i had sanded off the serial number. I was only sanding by hand and not very aggressively but apparently the number was not etched very well. I would not worry about it but Ohio does require titles. I already only have a non-notorized bill of sale for that I got when I bought it so I was going to have to file for a self-constructed title but now I have no numbers. Any suggestions? :-/

i know here in MD you can file for replacement VINs.

my buddy did this on one of his quads that he bought a new frame for, the state issued a new VIN and title. the vin was strange though, 12 Character MD-090390923 <- example

Hmm...I will hae to see if I can get any info from the DMV on this in Ohio. Hopefully I can get it worked out. I really dont want to have to buy another frame, then clean and prep again. lol

well according to the State Patrol Inspection Station...I am screwed. Will not be able to register it and since it has no number it is SEIZABLE Property. Great. Guess I have to look for a titled frame to avoid the headache.

That's bullshit that they can seize it. I would strip the quad down for now so that they can't take it, What did they hear about a quad? I just got some parts....

get a new frame and put her back together.

Yeah it really sucks. It is just a bare frame that I was going to use to start my next build but it looks like it may not happen too soon unless I can find a titled frame cheap. Its a long shot and with my luck I probably wont find one. Guess I have a prepped piece of scrap sitting in the garage.

don't toss that frame if thats what it comes down to, i'll take it to the DMV here and get a replacement vin stamped on nit

Might have to see if we could work something out. Would be nice to be able to get this thing "legal". Its such a pain in the ass. They didnt start titling atvs and dirtbikes here till 98 and they make it a huge PITA to title the older ones even. Guess I have to blame myself for sanding the number off but hell I really didnt sand too hard.

yeah i think my VIN is gone on mine now too, but i have the title for it and a DNR reg sticker with the vin on it so im okay.

AFAIK, the dmv is still doing vin stamps for ATVs/dirtbikes[havent tried this year yet], because titles are required here and if a frame is replaced they need some way to identify it

I wish it was that simple here. There are always around it but by the time you spend the money on getting a "Court Ordered Title" which you still have to have the numbers present to get, you could probably buy a bike that has a title.

That should hav never happened, u hav some pics, they r stamped in the frame pretty good, I thought i just saw some on ebay for like 100 with the title, maybe wrong but i thought i just saw some, gona go look now

maybe you can find one closer and not pay the shipping

Thanks for the link. I was looking on ebay earlier for one. closest thing that I found was in Kentucky and it had an original MSO which SHOULD allow me to get it titled here. I would have no problem driving there to get it but he wanted like $300 for it if I remember right. Really hate to shell out $300 for just a frame.

yea that sucks about the vin. i have my vin with the title and two extra frames that are straight with powdercoat paint. NO vin on the extra frames. my current frame im using that is vin'd is bent near an a arm so she pulls to the right a little. i was gonna swap frames but thought twice about it. here in RI if theres no vin and u run into the law, their taking ur bike and ure not getting it back

Basically the same thing I was told here. Thought about building anyway and just riding on private land but in the off chance I was to get pulled over with it on the trailer it would be gone. Also could never sell it. It would have to be part out only.

yea that really does suck. but ive never heard of cops pulling u over while its being towed just to run the #s on the bike. i heard in NYC they do. i never carry my title on me. also around my way 9 out of 10 ppl that selling their bikes on CL dont have paperwork to them u dont know if theyre stolen or what not. and from what i heard when cops run the vins on bikes nothing comes back whether its stolen or not unless it was stolen in THAT state. (my brother is a city cop) so i guess if i stole ur bike, and u reported it stolen, had papers and all. and i brought it here i guess the computer wouldnt show it. i dont wanna give no one any sneaky ideas i just think its stupid as hell

What if you had a pic of your vin? Could you somehow get it put back on? Just throwing out ideas.

Well I have the bill of sale from the PO with the number on it which I was told by the state still wouldnt work to get a title. But it is illegal for you to put the numbers on yourself. Has to be the mfg or state inspector. Thanks for the the idea though.

my boy said the same thing. if i swapped my frame out and if i ever ran into the law just show them the title. they wont even know where the vin is anywayand more than likely they wont even look for it. if they DID look for it to tell them i had it painted and i didnt realize the vin was painted. theyll take ur word fir it i think since u have the title right there in their face but who nows. when i got pulled over on my bike i showed him the title. he didnt even bother to look for the vin. just went to his car to ran it in the comp..
edit: oh damn u dont even have a title just a bill of sale. yea that aint gonna fly then. prolly better gettin it stamped or a new frame

Sorry to hear bout that man don't feel all to bad. Before I really new anything bout quads my 3 wheeler and blaster when I bought them nether of them had numbers. I ripped them bitches apart looking and didn't find anything

Worst part of this whole situation is it would never matter unless I just happened to run into a cop that wanted to be a dick. I could build it and ride it on private property only and not have any problems. Also would be a problem it it was ever stolen though. Would be no way for me to prove it was mine. Just not sure how to handle it yet. Buying a titled frame would be the best thing but they are not cheap and my budget is.
