Engine Swaps

this maybe a dumb $$s question but.. when you say the 250r are you talking about the honda motor or is it the Yamaha motor?

for the yz490 the swingarm needs to be cut for the bolt to go through the motor and all the mounts need to be changed it is not a bolt in engine!

to swap a yz490 into your frame you better be prepared to make new motor mounts an cut your swing arm im in the process with my blaster, i would never dumb 1000$ into a stock blaster motor its still junk!

I installed a yz490. cut out old mounts, fab new ones, cut right side of frame and fab a loop 3 in. for pipe clearance, fab a new pipe, cut right side of swingarm to fit rear engine. fab a heat shield for bottom of gas tank. cut fin on top of head for ease of plug removal, use yz490 coil. heat and bend kick start lever, add 4+ extended swingarm or you wont keep the front end down. Also yz490s are a bear to start and some like to detonate. 3 fixes for this.1, mill head to reduce compression. 2 , add an additional base gasket to reduce squish, however this method changes port timing a bit and you need to lower and polish both ports by the same thickness as the additional gasket, or 3, buy very expensive blue 100 octane av gas at your local airport. A 5 gal. mix will cost $34.00. I will be posting pics of my swap later this mo.

Nothing against your hard work Rix but a 490/CR500 swap into a Blaster or any quad for that matter has been done over and over again with the same results. They vibrate to death. It's to the point of not bein enjoyable to ride. Now if your into drags then no problem.

I swapped this motor into my Blasty with pretty good results. The vibes are easy and the power is rediculas.

I have a motor from a yamaha fzr 600,but im not putting it on a blaster it's going on my lt230 frame.

so how hard was the install on that? how hard is it to find replacement parts if it breaks?

The install was pretty easy. Just like any other then stock motor your gonna have to make some mounts and make sure the chain is aligned.
As far as replacement parts your gonna have to learn how to cross reference stuff as well as be nice to manufacturers.
As an example the 79-90's big bore YZ's were all based off the 79' YZ400. Other motors from the 70's use some of the same parts too. The Banshee motor is really from the 70's and started like in a street bike. I use a Banshee clutch in my 400 but all the big YZ's will fit. YZ490 rods are plentiful and work in my motor. An IT425 jug bolts right on and 465-490 do too with case machining. IT425 IT400 YZ400 cranks all work. All Ballz makes bearing and seal kits.
