If you have access to an impact, the point is moot. But if you ever do have to use this method, I suggest using old (copper or brass, I forget) washers from a banjo bolt....you know, if you removed a hydraulic brake line from a caliper you would have replaced these!! Same them, and use them for this.
You could also try stuffing a bunch of rags in the gears. I've used that method for getting the carrier out of a Dana 44 axle....doesn't hurt the gears at all.
