crank seal replacement "need help"

yesterday, I was trying to get to the crank seal on the clutch side.
The nut would not come loose and I need any suggestions to get it off with out the gear moving.

2 ways to do it. 1: use an impact gun to get it off or 2: stick a soft washer and stick it in between the gear in front of the crank seal and the balancer gear (right above the crank seal) so it wont turn. Either one will work out.

thanks,for the quick reply i think i will try to find a impact gun to get it off because i dont want to snap a tooth off by putting a washer in between the gears. Have you ever used the washer idea?

If you use brass or copper washers you should be fine. Impact gun works 100,000 times better though!! Pull the trigger and it's off!!

I have never used the washer method but, I have seen it done 1000 times by other people and on motor cycle engine rebuilds on you tube. xjma is right just use a soft washer and you wont snap off any teeth from any gears.

If you have access to an impact, the point is moot. But if you ever do have to use this method, I suggest using old (copper or brass, I forget) washers from a banjo bolt....you know, if you removed a hydraulic brake line from a caliper you would have replaced these!! Same them, and use them for this.

You could also try stuffing a bunch of rags in the gears. I've used that method for getting the carrier out of a Dana 44 axle....doesn't hurt the gears at all.

i've done the washer method a handful of times w/ aluminum and never had a prob.
tip, it's 10 times easier to get this nut off w/ the motor mounted in the frame. (since you're just replacing the seal, i'm sure you didn't pull it, but just in case).

aluminum, copper, brass, any metal or alloy that's soft should be no problem.

I'd recommend against doing it with a SS washer.
