I'm trying to replace my crank seals. I have the clutch cover off. From what i see all I will have to do is pull the nut off the crank, then the gear and I'll be able to change it out...is this about right or does the clutch and all that have to come off too? I did try to pull the "crank nut" off but that didn't happen, how tight is that thing? I used a short breaker bar and a hammer and it wouldn't move! I'm not fond of sticking wrenches into the crank to lock it up but I will do what is needed! For the love of blastys please help me get this ones heart pumping again!

Oh BTW its an 03 blaster 800!...lol...j/k

use a penny or something copper between the gears on the clutch side to hold it still. I usually use an impact but if you don't have one a breaker bar with a penny in the gears should work. copper is softer than steel is why you use a penny. it won't damage the gears. and yes that is how you get to the seal

two pennies stacked?....... i had to put two pieces of 2x4 across the crank chamber with a socket extention in the rod to get one off once but the crank was trash so i didn't care about it. it is easier with the motor installed unless you have someone strong to hold the tranny still

try finding older pennies, then newer ones are made of aluminum with a copper coating
and are very very soft, you can cut them in half with tin snips.

look in your change jar, like anything from the 70's or early 80's. i think they changed in 85.
if your not sure, take a pair of dikes and clip a small piece off, if its alum, it will cut easy, the older onew were made or annealed copper, which is hard, but still softer then steel.

good luck

I could go throw it in, and just leave the head off, put it in gear and strap the tire so it cant move! thing that would work? BTW someone told me my rings might be upside down, how do you tell? mine doesn't have words or anything, just brass on one side and metal on the other

I had a brand new one from weisco in the garage w/ instuctions and it said either side is ok unless specified differently. and mine do have some markings right next to the gap.

Mine have no markings at all, but thanks for the help, I did find an older penny and it did hold up alot better, but still cant break it loose, guess I'll take it to my buddies tomorrow and have him pop it off with the impact. I also realized the new crank seals are in my wife's car and she's at work so I'm dead in the water anyway!

ummm ummm ummm...Where to start...I broke out the impact to pull the gears off, but the gear was in the way on the clutch, so i had to pull that off too. I got it all apart then went to take the screw off the retainer for the seal and it stripped out, so I pulled out the die grinder and ground the head off. and finally got the seal out. I pulled the seal out in pieces so it was defiantly bad, but now my clutch is in pieces and don't know how it goes back together. does anyone have a diagram of how it goes together? I'm wanting to get it going by next weekend and I'm hoping that the local dealer can get me all the things I need by Thursday but that's probably not going to happen because there slower then molasses in January. Is there anything I should look at while I have it apart like the clutch and if so how do I tell if the clutches are getting worn?

this is the service manual, i forgot whos link it is, not mine, i just found it for you, in the future, try the search feature at the top of the forum page. just type in what your looking for and it will show you the way.
next time, before grinding that head off, use a pair of vise grips on it, that is a big head and it would of come out.
yamaha loves those crappy phillips heads. i call um "one timez", i change every bolt over to stainless steel allen heads. if a bolt comes off a motorcycle and it aint allen head, it will be when it goes back together

there is an manual here in the engine section stickied. also bikebandit.com has complete breakdown pics of the clutch. if your clutch wasn't slipping at all i would think it is fine. just make sure you don't lose the ball in the shaft where the pressure plate came off. the rod in the center of the pressure plate goes into that shaft and there is a ball bearing in there that has to be there for your clutch to work.
