Connecting Rod and Kickstart

So I just bought this 2001 Blaster and so far I've taken it apart and looked at this catastrophe of a connecting Rod and piston. It looks really rusted. And at first before I took it all apart the kickstart would go halfway down and wouldn't move. I opened up the crank case checked the spring...all is good...then I opened up to where the piston and rod are at and sprayed WD40 all in there..but now I'm wondering if I can just buy this whole bottom end from an 88 Blaster and exchange rods and if it will work the same. Did Yamaha change the length of those rods or did it stay the same and I shouldn't have a problem with putting it in this engine I have on now?
 
you cannot change just the rod without a press, and the knowledge to do so.
you can swap in a used crank though if thats what you meant ?
or even swap your top end onto any other known good bottom end.
all cranks/rods/engines are identical for the life of the blaster model years 88-06.
 
Sounds like you're screwed. Start from scratch and do it right. Skimping will only cost you more in the end. I've posted plenty of vids to help. A couple of hours of your time will save you hundreds. If all else fails, KOR can get you hooked up.
 
Yeah I was thinking just starting from scratch but also thought that i didnt really want to...oh well. I'm gonna take this stuff apart and try to clean it up as best as possible with parts cleaner.
 
Cleaning it up is not going to make rusty bearings new again. It needs a COMPLETE rebuild.
 
This isnt that bad a of a deal to rebuild the whole thing... Comes with everything you need when rebuilding. $280 seems like its not that bad honestly..

Now im not sure if it come with KOYO main bearings, if not grab them from KOR webiste - $50+ship
all the extra little doo dads, washers, circlips, lock washers, key, gear c clips, also KOR - $40
not sure if that kit comes with OEM base gasket or not also KOR $7.00
total price get get back to stock: $377.00 isnt that bad really....

Yeah $370 doesn't sound bad..I was actually just about to ask where I could find a bottom end kit and a pretty good top end kit.
 
now i have never used that kit, I am not sure how good it is but weisco does make quality stuff. Anyone else used that kit before?
 
Weisco do not really have a good reputation for there crankshaft kits, the are reported to be Chinese made.

OEM is the better option.

Weisco pistons on the other hand are reported to be very good.

Knew i could get someone to answer haha. What about a hotrods crank? would that suffice? Its just about the same price.
 
Why not rebuild the OEM rod with a pro-x rod kit, thats the best out there, vito's also sells cranks an there good units, I just put one in my wife's engine, an my stroker has the vito's+3 in it.
 
That should work. But before you buy a new piston, have the bore measured. Make sure you can bore it one more time. Then by the piston BEFORE having it bored. Give it to the machinist when they are doing the work. Or to make it easy on you, pack the cylinder up, ship it to KOR and buy the piston and stuff from him. he will set you straight.
