Carb Recommendations

Thanks for all your help.

It doesn't idle that good unfortunately. It stumbles and backfires and will only stay running for about 15 seconds at most. I threw the carb in a carb cleaner bath last night and will pull it out tonight and clean it as best as possible.

Where are you at Teqmod? If you're lucky I'm close by and could swing by there. We'd get it figured out in 10 minutes flat. If need be and you can wait, I can send out my stock blaster carb for you to test with as well, you pay shipping there and back. I know it works fine.... other than the needle sticks sometimes...
Oh yeah! Make sure the float is set right and the needle is letting enough fuel into the bowl! That could be the whole deal right there!

Maryland..... not quite right around the corner I am sure.

I have the floats set, pretty sure they are correct. just below (1/8 inch tops) the seam line at the bowl/carb.

I can get it to run for a second off starting fluid so I am pretty sure it is a fuel issue. Of course that was only for 10 seconds as not to do any engine damage. I went ahead and ordered a carb that supposedly works off ebay. If it works great, if not I am out $50 but I can always re-sell it I guess.

I am going to pull out the original from the bath when I get home tonight and see how it turns out.

Pull the fuel petcock out of the tank too if you have not already. That may be plugged and just trickling fuel in there. Last thing to check I guess. Also, make sure you have the right jets in the carb off ebay... lots of guys lean them out (because it runs so fast... maybe the ass dyno DOES lie) then burn down the engine only to part it out. Should be a 260 bone stock I think.

Good luck, you'll get it dialed in. I:I

^yuppers...heres a pic of the petcock...there are 2 long fine screens, 1 for "on and 1 for "reserve"...clean it out real good

I opened the petcock and drained the fuel that was in the tank and had good flow so not leaning towards this issue. Had an offsite meeting (happy hour) after work this evening so not getting much done. I did pull the carb from the cleaner bath and stuck it in a bucket of unleaded for tonight. Soaking it another day can't hurt, right?

I am trying. That is what is so frustrating about this. I am 99.9% sure it is a carb issue but with all of hte weird TORS issues I hear about it makes me wonder. We will see after the carb install tonight and/or the replacement that arrives. Once it is running I can look at upgrading but right now I just want to see a little smoke.

Get that thing running yet?

No luck, runs a little better than before. It will continue to idle for the most part, give it a little gas and it backfires and dies. I was actually able to keep it running with the throttle wide open on choke but the RPMs never went up. I think this tells me the TORS is OK but it still is not running well. New ebay carb should be here tomorrow. Wish me luck with this one.

Edit: I also pulled the screw from the float after it was installed to insure I was getting good flow through the float valve and it has plenty of fuel. If it is not a carb I have no idea what it could be.

Man it sure sounds like one of the crank seals or base gasket is leaking. If that eBay carb doesn't work for you, that's gotta be it.... maybe..:-/

I guess it is possible. If I could keep it running long enough to check that would be nice. Luckily the weekend is here so I should have a good few hours to mess with it instead of 30 mins here and there.

EDIT: Thinking about it more you may be correct. I never really checked to see how much vacuum was going into the carb abd if the leak is bad enough. I kinda have the 4-stroke mentality unfortunately and this kinda went right past me.

The bad thing with 2 strokes is that even a small leak will make it run really lean. You could pour some fuel down the spark plug hole and fire it up... if it revs way up, it's getting air from somewhere. You don't need it to run long to check it... If it's running at all just spray brake cleaner or wd40 or any combustible aerosol around the base gasket and the stator. I fthere is a leak, it'll rev up. Also, to check the crank seal at the tranny side just see if there is any vacuum present at the trans vent, There should be none whatsoever.

Got it idling with the choke all the way out. Checked the vent tube and no vacuum. Sprayed the startor cover down in Carb Cleaner and no change in how it ran. Carb did not arrive today. USPS should have it here tomorrow.

Well, that's good news! what about the cylinder base gasket? Maybe the reed gasket too?

I'm just throwing stuff out there.

Well, the carb was not the issue. I put the replacement on and it ran the same. While it was idling I sprayed the whole engine down in carb cleaner to see if it ever changed the way it ran and nothing. I am now at a loss and have no idea where to go with this thing.

So I started reading around here more on this TORS system and saw a post
try unplugging the wire going to the parking brake...sometimes those mess up and act like a rev limiter
I unplugged this and it actually tries to run. It will throttle up to an extent. Time to get rid of the TORS. Been chasing my tail for two weeks now and I keep coming to this as the most likely cause. I have read alot of posts and never saw anything about a parking brake switch. Here is thethread It says something about removing everything and grounding the green wire. Is this correct?
