Allegan Mi.
I just picked up a "99" Blaster. I won it on a online auction for $800.00. It is said to have a rebuilt motor they think .10 over. Not sure of piston or anything else. It started up first kick, but it wont idle. Rode it around the yard a bit and it ran like crap and then died on me. I pulled the plug and it was black. I put a new one in and it still doesnt want to idle. I was going to pull the carb off and clean it good and see what jet is in it. Is that a good starting point? It does have a Toomey Racing USA full exhaust and after market foam filter. Any help on this would be great.
Thanks,

Yeah, a good baseline should be to pull the carb off and see what it has in it. Make sure the float and float valve function correctly, see what the jets are etc. Then you'll likely have an idea where to start troubleshooting. Sounds like it's very rich. Does it smoke excessively? If so, what color is the smoke. Blue means rich, white means trouble likely.

I would bet its not the carb unless someone has changed it with one of a dirt bike take a pic of the carb on the bike or do you know if its stock for sure, sounds like you may have a timing issue pull the mag cover and make sure flywheel is tight and everything nice and clean.

first off welcome we have another michigander.
it sounds like you have a carb issue try messing with your idle adjustment and make sure the carb is clean.

Okay, i took the carb off and it has a 310 jet in it. The needle must be all the way down cause i see no grooves to move it to without taking it apart. I took the whole exhaust off cause i noticed a real dark black oil around the fitting where it connects to the motor. Inside the exhaust is all carboned up.I cleaned the foam air filter and re oiled it. I didnt tear the carb completly apart, i just took it off the bike and took the bowl off and and sprayed it with carb cleaner. Put it back on and still runs like crap. Lots of blue smoke and it still wont idle. I turned the idle screw in and out and it seemed to have no difference at all on how it was running. Oh yeah, one other thing i noticed, when i was riding it and went to stop, it has absolutly no breaks, nice huh?

If the motor is stock or mostly stock, 310 sounds pretty big. I have a pipe and reeds, and was running a 270 before changing to my new carb. However, the main jet shouldn't affect the idle that much, unless it is just fouling the plug and dying.

its always ganna smoke blue its a 2stroke..
black smoke means rich.
white smoke means you have a blown crank seal

I had asked if it was smoking excessively. Yes, OBVIOUSLY, it will always smoke some, but lots of blue smoke means too rich. It shouldn't fog out the guy riding behind you. I've never seen a two stroke run so rich it smokes black, but maybe they will.
