Hi,
I joined this site because I own a 2000 Yamaha Blaster and also because I have a major problem with it. I have had it for about 4 years now and I love it. I took it out for the first time this year from being garaged for the winter and rode it pretty hard. While I was riding it suddenly died and I haven't been able to start it ever since. I bought a new starter plug, cleaned the filter and made sure it was filled with oil etc. Then I noticed that when I try to kick start it, air would come out of (what I think) is between or on the cylinder and gasket. It looks like a small crack or slit. So basically the engine loses compression and can't start. Is there a way I can fix this fairly cheap or is it a complete engine rebuild? Any advice would help.

Sorry I'm not as mechanically inclined as the rest of you, I'm trying to teach myself so give me some credit :/

thanks for your time! :)

sounds like a head gasket, or worse...base gasket.
they're known to survive head gasket leaks, but base gaskets leaks will quickly fry the piston.

is it leaking up top between the head and cylinder, or where the cylinder meets the bottom cases ?

you're going to have to tear it apart, inspect the cylinder and piston, post pics here for help determining the condition, and hopefully just replace the gasket, reassemble and leakdown and compression test it.

here's the manual for help tearing it down.......

Yes it's where the cylinder meets the bottom cases.. Could it have anything to do with overheating? It got pretty hot.

it got hot from that gasket leaking, sucking in air making it run very lean
it'll be a miracle if there's no piston/cylinder damage.
time to tear it down

Little GREEN for ya for being honest on your abilities.

PLEASE clean the motor and under tank and frame before you even start tearing it apart.
Study the manual before you take it apart. I'm sure there are tips in the D L manual as in a Clymers on how to do it. After you remove the cylinder stuff a clean rag around rod/crank to keep stuff from falling into lower crankcase.

Alright, So It's been a few months since I last posted anything about my blaster. It is finally put back together, we replaced the gaskets, and now we have no spark. The spark plug is new, and we tested it before we dissembled the engine. It's 95% complete, we just need to figure out why it doesn't have a spark. I was told it has nothing to do with the magneto. Any advice? :-/
Thanks.
