I posted this on bluetraxx forum and didnt get a response

I have a 2001 blaster all stock a guy gave it to me in trade for a survey of his property ( im a land surveyor) its been sitting for a long time and has not ran in atleast 4 years. I cleaned it up and put a new plug and gas and oil and it started on the third kick but there are a few problems

1: when you kick it the kick start doesnt come up on its own you have to pull it up

2: when I pullled in the clutch and put it in first it died right away so I adjusted the cable and now it will stay running while I put it in gear

3: but when I put it in gear it makes all kinds of bad clunking noises, it will move but will stall after a few feet.

when I got it he said it would prolly need a new clutch so I ordered on from dennis kirk a ebc one do you think thats all it is or not

thanks and by the way my name is Mike and I am from Michigan

I figured out the kick start problem when the clutch cover was off the kick start gear and spring were not put in right but the other stuff Im still unsure about thanks

any chance you can post a vid? blasters tend to be noisy by nature but not clunky. i can get a vid of mine idleing if you want a comparison

it makes noise at idle and thats not bad but when its in gear its loud as hell and wont even move its sounds like somthing is broken but I took the cover off and nothing seems loose I have a new clutch kit but dont wanna waste my time installing it if its somthing major

well that sounds like it could be the clutch, so is that a no on getting a vid of it?

think I should just replace the clutch first? is it worth a try or get a video first? I have extra gaskets new just in case I had to take it apart a few times

well does anything appear horribly wrong with it? are there any major grooves cut into the basket? or are the plates all burnt and sh*tty looking from what you can tell? clutches are pretty cheap and it never hurts to put a new one in so i say why not but that definately does not mean its going to fix ur issue

I dont really see anyting but I havent worked on a quad since I was a teenager 10-15 years ago. All I have done is take off the side cover, do I need to take the basket off to to see or can you tell by the out side I can take pics

nice pics! i personally dont see anything horribly wrong, the plates look kinda smoked but ive seen worse haha :D. i would toss a clutch in and see what happens. one last thing though, that gear that is behind the clutch with the rivets in it.. tap it with ur finger tip a few times and see if that is super loose its kinda a common problem.

the gear super is talking about is for the counter balancer shaft. also check the kick start idler gear for slop. it's to the left of the clutch basket. Be careful not to loose the little ball that is in the clutch. I would highly suggest getting a Clymers repair manual, best tool you can get.

If the kickstart wasnt installed right like you said then maybe it was trying to engauge. That is not a broken bolt in the middle of the clutch that ia the push rod that disengauges the clutch. it butts up against the lever on the left side of the engine.

Im a blaster newbie too and i would like to know the normal noise of these engines. My TRX250r rattles a little at idle. but this blaster is a little louder.

ok thanks this thing is being a pain lol I took the engine completly out today to wash the frame real good Im going to put it all back together tomorrow and see how it goes

just wanted to say thanks again I just got it all back together and took it for a sping runs great and the noise I was hearing when it went in gear turned out to be the chain I think it was too long and when put in gear the teeth were just spining and the chain wasnt but all is good

it was my first run with a blaster I am used to my 400ex with jet kit and exhaust but this thing is pretty quick and I am a big guy 6ft 230lbs I will prolly end up selling it casue the wife wont get on it I was hoping she would ride this one
