Base Gasket

I've seen a few problems with paper base gaskets this year. All of them were K and S. Nothing but OEM from now on for me. I just picked up 12 of them and plan on keeping them in stock.

That sounds like the head gasket measurements. Otherwise I have no clue whats up with the sizes. Brandoz were differant too.

Definately not head gasket, i know the diferance. Head gasket is .o71" give or take. I supplied part nuber as well. Only thing i see is either they are not the same or these 300 dollar calipers are wrong.

Here's what I found. All of the OEM gaskets I have are .032 / .035 thick not compressed. Not sure what they'll be after compression but I'll find out. Yamaha superseded the part number three times during production. I have no idea what the thickness of the older part numbers were. All of the paper gaskets I could dig up are .020 compressed. I called LA Sleeve yesterday and asked about the Cometic gaskets. The tech told me they were steel, coated on both sides with sealer and .020 compressed. I'll order a set of the Cometics today to confirm what he told me. I'll also compress a stock gasket and report back.

this is all just awsome stuff, but are we talking any performance, compression or other differences between .020 and .035 gaskets, and wiould that small amount raise the port hiegth enuf to effect anything ???

still gotta recheck my compression after kens latest round of work, when we found the k&s gasket had sucked in and was blocking off half my transfers, and the klotz oil had me so carboned up the rings were shot
but damn it's running the best ever, so i didnt see the need

That's strange...the one I just got was .022 guess I'll have to take my calipers with me when I pick up gaskets now. .032 will not work...that's alot more squish...less compression :{

Edit: Awk ya beat me. Depends on what it was setup for. Mine was set up for .018 to .020 base. Compression loss would probably be 5 to 7 lbs

All good points. Kenny, the dealer may be slippin you Cometics thinkin it's not a big deal. In your case it's not. Awk's compression dropped 15 lbs from a .020 gasket to the .032ish OEM.

Might be a cometic, I usually don't use OEM and now that you mention it this one does look differant from what I remember.

I just put a oem grey gasket in and there was some paper brown one in there. Am i gonna loose compression ken?

ok ken so it i go with a oem base gasket should i use a high compression head gasket.? I am going to go measure my gaskets now.

ok i just got some crazy differnent #'s

oem as we know .032
oem compressed .0255
one that looks oem but has little dots all over it .042 holy crap huge gasket.
vitos metal gasket .010 super thin and seems to be good quality
el cheepo paper that came with vitos 3mil stroker .019
I think this one was a cometic compressed .016
I didn't have a new cometic.

I can't belive the differnce in size that could be substancial power changes.
