my son has a 2001 blaster he sheared a flywheel key now that we replaced it it doesent want to run .. it almost acts like its out of time . there are no marks on the fly wheel to verify top dead center . when i took it apart there was a wire that was pinched between the stater for the spark coil that shorted out . it has spark but acts like its fireing though the carb .is it posible to twist the crank and this be the cause of it being out of time . it did start a little bit but would not rev at all . now when trying to start it seems like there is smoke comming from the carb . is there a spot to line up the keyway with something and make sure it lines up with top dead center. thanks

Have you checked your reeds? In order for smoke to be comming from the carb it has to back track through them which it shouldn't do.

every time i have had my fly wheel off i have never had to do anything but bolt the stator back into place and line up the keyway and woodruff key, it has never mattered where the crank is

Why did the flywheel shear the key in the first place, poor assembly, piston seize, hydro lock, cause could help diagnose starting problem.

Why was that wire pinched, sounds like poor assembly, may have stressed the electrical system.

If you have replaced the woodruff key and tightened the flywheel properly, the timing will be correct.

Is it possible that when the timing slipped it backfired damaging the reeds.

More information please.
