are blasters reliable? everyone i see has a rebuild.

I'm looking to buy an atv.

Are blasters reliable? Everyone i see for sale has a rebuild or multiple engine rebuilds done. I've been looking at 1998-2002's, not new by any means but not that old. Seems like 90% of them i see for sale needs a new top end or crank or rod bearing, bored 20 over, 40 over 80 over, seized, won't start, etc etc. seems kind of crazy for a simple 2 stroke single cylinder air cooled engine.
 
most of the problems are operator inflicted..........a blaster can be very reliable if you take care of it as you should. keep it clean, keep the filter clean, good fuel, good oil, and keep an eye on the jetting
 
Well we bougt our blaster brand new in 04, its still in stock rings/bore/piston. It has never given any problem at all and its still running really f*cking strong. Take care of your machine and it will take care of you.

But sometimes when buying something used that has had X number of past owners, you gotta check it really good everywhere, some people are jsut really dumb and destroy machines.
 
yes they are very reliable if taken care of, but most kids get one baught for them by mommy n daddy so they dont take care of it, they run the piss out of it and when it blows they blame the machine
 
A two stroke is supposed to have the top end rebuilt by the way. Not many people have mentioned that but supposedly if you run it every weekend pretty good then it needs the top end rebuilt every year or so. But like mentioned above use good oil, good (high octane) gas with higher quality oil in it and you will be pretty good. Change the jets, it's always best to run with it a bit richer if you are getting the power you need with it like that. A lot of people recommend klotz oil by the way. A 2 stroke blaster will need maintenance but it's worth it. And don't skimp on a part that it needs, if you wait the problem will be more costly down the road.

Anyone know if Klotz super techniplate 2 oil is any good? that's what I am looking to switch to and I just wanted to know if anyone thought it was good.
 
i run regular klotz techniplate, and love it, i herd the super techinplate wont work for winter???

but 2 strokes only need to be rebuilt when they need it, race machines are rebuilt more offen to keep them 'fresh' and at peak power
 
my blaster ran just fine and i wanted to rebuild it since i had the parts and i found out my piston was cracked and never gave me a problem
 
Mine over heated, big time. But running the piss outta it for 6+ hrs non stop then letting your friends take it out will do that on any machine. That's why mine got rebuilt. But if you do that to any bike its gonna blow.

Blasters are rock solid bikes, all ATVs break at some time, some more then others.
 
I feel as long as you keep the fluids fresh and get it jetted good along with regularly cleaning the air filter, your good to go. A stock blaster is not a modern high strung race bike, its a old school 1970's engine...... a detuned one at that. You still should pull off the head and check things over about every 30-35hrs and replace anything thats out of spec, also check your comp every so often.
 
stock piston from 89 in my blaster until last year, thats 20 years on a piston. and it never went, i decided on a 240 kit otherwise i would still be running that motor.
 
i agree yes they are very reliable one main thing is that people ride the crap out of them and they run it lean on the topend so they burnit up or they just dont take care of the bike theres a lot of factors, if your bike is tuned and taken care of then it will last longer.
 
i had a buddy that bought an early 90s banshee while i had my 85 lt250r. he ran the hell out of that thing and was at wot alot!i believe his was at two years old when he had to have it rebuilt cuz it lost all compression. as it would happen, my lt went down roughly abuut the same month. he was giving me a ton of crap untill he learned my ten year old engine was on its stock bore, and he was rebuilding his after 2 years.like everyone that has stated before. buy it, rebuild it, and maintain it. itll last you a long time.
 
The techniplate that I was looking at is good for pretty much only higher rpms. Who can recommend a decent oil for a low rpm rider. I'm still not a real experienced rider and just ride pretty conservatively on trails. I open it up still but not a whole lot. Is it better to just ride it at a little higher rpm rather than shift her up?
 
if you have no clue about motors, you're better off with a 4 stroke, as they're more user friendly. It's easier for people with not much experience to damage a 2 stroke.

with a little knowledge 2 strokes are just as reliable if not more so than a 4 stroke. It's all about proper maintenance.

Think of a 2 stroke like a super model. hot, fun to ride, but more maintenance than your average chic.
 
Depends on what kinda 4 stroke bike your talking about. A 300 or 400ex will run for years with the oil changed every now and then and the air filter cleaned every few rides. Just like a Blaster.

But a titanium valved race ready 450 KFX, LTR YFZ or TRX, that's a whole nother story
