another brake light problem

same as the last guy but i have a 1990 blaster.i never had a rear brake light because the last owner broke everything on the bike.my question is does the light switch have to be on in order for the rear light to shine?
or is there wires i need to connect together in order to get em to shine?

88-01 had tail light only, 02+ had tail light/brake light.
If you only have tail light it should turn on with your head light.
If you have brake light also it will light up when ever you hit the brakes, regardless if your head light is on or not.
