Shouldn't slide in and out that easily. It should take some tapping at least. As far as condition, a new seal has very sharp lips (the part that touches the crank or crank spacer). I can't really see that in your pic very well.

But frankly, spend the money and put in new seals, It's the only way to go. After you have done all this work is not the time to get cheap.

was it smoking more than usual too? that clutch side will cause tranny oil to get into the combustion chamber.
