hi there, i am new to this site and am hoping someone might beable to help. i have a 1988 blaster that was running great when i bought it a day ago. i put in new plug, cleaned carb, i drained the oil and there was only a cup in the case, i filled it to its recommended capacity, it fired right up ran good for and hour then was hard to start. could i have messed something up when i fill up the oil. i noticed oil coming from somewhere on the left side(im assuming thats why it was low on oil) it seamed to flood and wouldnt start. when it did, i could get low end but as soon as it gave it throttle it would bog on me. after a few start ups it started back firing and would die, and then it blew the reed gastet out of the top of the cage. i notice there was no gasket of the carb side of the reed. now it will not start. any suggestions? someone told me i have an airleak or a bad seal. would that cause those problems? it has oil block off, jetted right, and kn filter. the reeds are not laying flat against the cage. all this just happened in a matter of an hour of running it off and on. any help would be absolutely apprectiated. thanx

that doesn't sound to good.
the rule of thumb for me is that if it is not broken and is working good i don't take it off and mess with it.

i'm sure that if it is an airleak then its a mighty big one. pm holeshotman and buy one of his leakdown testers. its well worth the $30.

was the blaster ever rebuilt? does it look like it has been abused?

oh and the reeds need to be laying flat against the cage so you would need new reeds and a new reed gasket, then deal with the oil problem if it is leaking into the crankcase

When you drained all the oil and replaced it, what type of oil did you use? (off topic) You are supposed to use Motorcycke 10w-30.

Did you drain the gas? If so, its important that you use a premix. 32:1 (4oz/gallon) is what i recommend. Make sure its with a good quality 2 stroke oil like Yamalube 2R, BelRay Mc1, Klotz Super-techniplate, Maxima Super M, Motul, Spectro. I know more people on here will come up with more but this is just a list of the ones i've heard good stuff from. Once you pick on oil, dont go back unless you drained your gas tank and carb. I am gonna be running Yamalube 2R cause my bud gets a discount from his dealer. I think im getting it 10% cheaper (not much but better than full price). and tyler1blaster is right, buy holeshotmans leak down tester, great investment.

thanx for the info. looks like i need to replace the reeds. the oil leaking into the cranlcase makes sense. and yess it did smoke alot and backfire. i get plenty of fuel to the carb. if the reeds dont lay perfectly flat against the cage, would that run it rich? could that be the cause of it bogging down at 1/4 throttle on up? i might drain some of the oil out and see if it runs.
