Alright, I was hoping to get some help with this. My grandpa bought this quad back in '85 and it's become my project for this winter. I was wondering if anyone here could give me some tips on what to do to it. Here's a Pic.

YellowQuad.jpg

First of all; The quad is 24 years old. The last time the air filter was cleaned was 1990. The carb has never been rebuilt.. Tranny oil was replaced 4 years ago, All 4 tires have leaks. Rear brake casing is bent, so It doesn't stop all that well..

Any Tips?

Suprisingly, It runs like a dream. This is a quad that's been flipped atleast 75 times. No plastic cracks. Starts 2-3 Pull... What I`m planning to do is:

- Install new air filter.
- Rebuild top end?
- Buy a newer set of tires (still used)
- Pull off plastics, Repaint them Brighter Yellow.
- Replace Tranny Oil.
- Possibly Add a FmF Exhaust system.
- Take off back racks..

Thats all I can think of now, That's why Im asking for more stuff.. lol

ah i rember my moto4. it was a 250 89'. what a ghetto machine but reliable as hell. the rear brake worked really well i remeber that. i tore it down with the help of my dad(i was like 13) and replaced all the wheel bearings, bushings, new battery and a new oem silencer because the old one was rusted out. great machine. when we bought it, the electric start worked but eventually, slowly failed then i had to pull start it untill my dad took apart the starter motor, cleaned it up and cleaned contacts n sh*t then it worked great. sold it for what i bought it for like 2 years later but we put the silencer, battery and bearings into it. good deal.

Any updates?? If you need parts I have this and thats around for that quad..
Also like new yamaha rims with new Mud buster tires too.. like the ones on it .. 1 ride on them if your ever interested and need rear rubber.

But they are a tank for sure and pretty darn reliable!
Enjoy!

I agree with everything but rebuilding the top end. It's a 4 stroke and there's more to it and if it runs and starts good it doesn't need rebuilt. Definitely change the oil, clean, oil, and maybe replace the air filter. Clean and rebuild the carb. All the other stuff you said would be good too, a new seat cover wouldn't hurt either.;)

Daft... Awesome, my brothers got one of them he just rebuilt. 85 Moto4. The exhaust pipe cracked and started melting the plastic, im about to braze it. Ya those things are real hard to find parts for. You might try e-bay. I tried to find some oem parts for his but too damn expensive, so i pretty much rigged everything. Bored the head, new rings, painted the plastics, fix a flat the tires. Its runs like new. What specific problem you having with yours? Send me a PM and ill try or have my brother address it for you, hes been all in and out on that moto4 a million times.

looking for parts, hard to find in northern ontario.

I'm restoring a '85 Tri-Moto and found that Dan at Motor Head Toys 704-463-1781 has been a great help with parts. He has alot on ebay but if you don't see it give hime a call. He is only open M - W - F 11am - 6pm. Hope this helps and good luck
