Hello Guys,
I am new to this forum and new to blasters. I have been in the banshee world for a few years now and have a pretty nice ripping shee. I picked up a 89 Blaster last week for trade of a extra snowmobile I had. Seems to be in pretty good shape for its age.
Modifications I've found:
-Possibly a RAD billet carrier
-Oil pump delete(not sure if actual pump is out)
-Douglas wheels on the rear

I just ordered a new cylinder as one of the reed bolt flanges was broken off as you can see in the pictures.

Plans:
-Boyesen or Vforce3 Reed
-FMF Fatty/Turbinecore Exhaust
-TORS Delete kit
-K&N Filter
-Awk08's GSXR Brake kit
-FXR Nerfs
-Pro Taper bars
-New plastics
-Civics or Burgard +2 arms
-+4 axle
-400ex rear shock

Thats all I have planned for right now and what the budget can handle. Any suggestions are appreciated and I hope to have this going soon. Enjoy...

Nice man! Good to have you here!

That's a pretty good looking blaster for its age. Give it a good cleaning and I bet it'll look even better!

Sounds like you've got some good plans for it. Keep us updated with lots of pics (we love pics).

Looks pretty good, your probably going to have a hard time finding the rear caliper if you dont have it already. For the year as said its in pretty good shape, paint is worn pretty good on the side of the frame so its been ridden but somebody has taken care of it at least a little.

You going to get rid of that broken cylinder? i might be interested, got lots of stuff for trade.I:I

damn it's got decent compression sux to have to get another cylinder. do you think you could find a welder to add material there and then tap it. if not i have a cylinder here that is around stock bore. between 66mm and 66.50. lemme know if you need it

How much do you want for it? Send me a pm, mine is acting up. I will probably save the broke one and try to get it repaired nicely for a back up.

My goal for it right now is to get it running stong and cleaned up a bit, ride it around this fall and spring and next summer/fall tear it down and do a full frame up rebuild (powdercoat, chrome, billet, the whole shebang)

So I tore into it tonight and have bad news. This full rebuild will start sooner than I wanted but I guess now I can make it how I want it and know that everything is in good working order.

I took off the head and the cylinder to find that the top ring has stuck its self to the cylinder and there is two small cooper colored specs. Those specs are one of the crank washers that looks like it has rusted and began to fall apart. The cylinder looks real clean though, no scoring or gouges. It is also at 66.50 so if I can get the reed flange fixed that will definitely stay as a spare. The crank also has way too much side to side play, not sure what spec should be but it was probably .03 if not more.

This will be my first blaster motor I have cracked open and hope it to be fairly start forward. I have built 2 banshee motors from bare cases up and have also built 2 snowmobile twins from the cases up. I will be sure to take lots of pictures along the way.

I am thinking of tearing the whole bike down this fall and get the frame powdercoated, not sure on a color yet maybe silver vein with black plastics.

Heres the pictures from tonight.

Thanks for posting pics.

Looks like a nice project to do. does look like a crank rod, bearing rebuild. unless you find a decent used one. that thrust washer / bearing is toast on the one side.

Looks like the big issue was rust damage from sitting so long.

The brown on the piston is blow buy from bad rings.

Im surprised you got that high of a psi reading, perhaps due to the rust, giving you a higher reading.

Sporty

Yeah, I was suprised I got 127psi as well. I have 5 days off next week and plan to pull the motor and strip everything down to just the rolling chassis for now. I will dismantle the wiring harness as it looks nasty, eliminate the unneccessary wires and re tape and wire loom it. Has anyone ever done a shift star mod on the blaster or does it not create enough power to make shifting harder like the banshee?

Looks like you've got a good handle on the little beast !

yes to the shift star mod, makes a huge difference

ken can have that crank back to specs in a jiffy,
give him a call, i just talked to him and he was headed into the shop to work

That intake window ear may or may not have been the root of the problem. BTW, that could be repaired and that cylinder saved if it has enough bore life left to justify it!

Looks like you've got a fine handle on it already, keep the pics coming!

Yeah the cylinder measured at 66.50 so there's plenty of life left. what are you talking about with the intake window ear??

Pulled the motor tonight, thing is disgusting, I hate having dirty parts haha..
If you can see the 3 little nicks in the head, it feels flush when I run my finger over them, no burrs..just indents. I should still be safe reusing that head??

So for the past 2 days I have been trying to get the dang flywheel off, of course threads are stripped so the puller wont work. Tried the 2 bolt, drill and tap, steering wheel puller trick, no go that way, its hard to get the holes straight drilling or its just the operatot lol. I might try and weld the puller to the flywheel tomorrow. If not I will drill another set of holes get a new tap and try that way again. Flywheel is the only thing holding me back from spitting the cases.........kinda frustrating.
