White Smoke

I did something really stupid the other day. I changed my gear oil and when i went to go start my quad to get the oil level right I forgot that my FMF pipe plug was in. It wouldn't start at first and then it finally started. (with the plug in) Anyways, white smoke started to come out of where the pipe attaches to the motor. The engine was also really bogged down.(no sh*t right) I finally figgured out what had happened and I saw that the FMF pipe plug was in. I took it out and my blaster started up first kick. Then it started blowing tons of white smoke.

I was just wondering what I might have done to my quad. I am pretty sure that since its white smoke I am thinking that I blew my crank seal on that side. Any other suguestions as to waht may have happened? Anything would be great!I:II:II:II:II:I

May just have that much residual oil from your premix in the cylinder. How long did you run it for? I imagine it would smoke like crazy for a good 10-15 seconds or so.

yea your crank seal is leaking the white smoke is comeing out cause its burnin gear oil ...

maybe you should just tear you motor down a build it up tough! uh er how do you change the crank seals? sounds like work to me.

it smoked for 1-2 minutes at least. Well I will look into replacing my crank seals. Anybody have any hits into doing this? I don't really feel like breaking open my case but don't I have to in able to replace the seal??

a crank seal is easily changed. just ened to drain oil and take off clutch cover the remove clutch and a couple gears.

It's very simple to replace the crank seals. Remove clutch cover, then take off the 5 springs and nuts for the clutch plate, remove the cluch boss nut, then remove the thing that holds the disks , followed by the clutch basket, next remove the gears that are on the crank itself, take off seal retainer, Take out old seal put in new seal, reassemble. Make sure you line up the marks on the balancer gear and the crank gear. Also line up the 2 dots on the clutch basket and the plate the springs go on. You'll understand once you get it apart.

it's still smoking...it smoked alot before i decided to turn it off and take it apart.

hahaha i told you that thing was f*cked when i looked at it yesterday. how do you get the other side off. if you get it all together soon lets go riding on monday.

Sorry to dig up a old thread, are any special tools required? I'm looking at a service manual and it looks like you need a puller for the magneto side.

ya you do need a puller. they are like $15.00

it helps to have a clutch/flywheel holder too. it helps w/ both sides.

white smoke is not caused from the coil side because there is no oil over there lol

there is seal behind the flywheel, i had one that leaked

Correct^^^^ there are two seals, one for the clutch and one on the flywheel side

what samolia is saying is that the ignition side seal wouldn't be causing the white smoke. and ignition side seal leak would cause erratic engine revving.
i think he said that because of my post about the clutch/flywheel holder, i was just saying that it's a handy tool that is useful for both sides of the crank.
