So Cal
Purchased a non running blaster. Fixed the low compression with a fresh top end. Leak down test successful, seems to have spark but won't start. I had a couple of quick backfires but that's it. Perhaps a fuel issue? The carb seemed to be in pretty bad shape when I was cleaning and rejetting for the new pipe. I couldn't seem to get the float to hang at the correct depth (sagged down farther) no matter which way I bent the little tab. So, not sure if it is a fuel problem. I know the carb it getting gas, I loosened the screw at the bottom of the float bowl and could drain fuel from the bowl. Is there a way to quickly tell if the carb is not feeding the engine fuel? Could I remove the air intake and spray some starter fluid into the carb? Any thoughts?

I had that same problem when it first got mine. Put new reeds in and ran great. Not saying yours are bad but mite want to check.

Not sure how to check for bad reed valves. The seemed to be closed tightly. Are there any specs or tests to detect a bad reed?

If the reeds are visually good (no chips or cracks) and close tight, they should be good. A good way to check is hold them up toward a light, look though them and if you can see any light in the them they aren't closing all the way.
