im about to buy a rickystators adustable plate and it has 1-10 degrees on it and was woundering what would happen for a change of 4,6,8,10 degrees... and what i would need to do for those, jetting, pipe change, difrent premix ratio, alky?
Timing advance will give you an increase in bottom to mid power, smoothing out the power-band a little. Too much timing will cause detonation (pre-ignition), and will require more octane. Depending on compression, +4-+5 is about the max for premium pump gas. The most I'd recommend on race fuel (110) is 7deg. Be careful not to push your luck too much with timing and/or compression...It WILL cost you a top end.
+10 deg is not recommended for any fuel type, don't even know why they put that much adj into the plates. Detonation begins on your compression stroke just before the spark plug is supposed to ignite the charge, it is much more violent than normal combustion and tends to erode the top of the piston away, damage the head ect. It pretty much continues to detonate untill you shut the engine down once it has begun.
