ok so my son has a 2005 blaster( all stock) and wants an KFX 400,because he wants ore power out of his lil quad. So my question being what should I do/ what do you recommend I install?

FMF exhaust 250$
K&N air filter 100$
V forse 4 reeds 125$
240 bore kit 130$
banshee rear hubs ( to run a pair of tires and rims we already have) 50$
ex 400 rear shock and new bushing 75$
sprock and o ring chain 13t, 40t 100$
PERFORMANCE IGNITION COIL 40$

So for 870$ish I think I can make his blaster fast. But is there a better/ cheaper way ? I have looked into the hole porting of the head/ hone cyl, a bigger carb, but what are your opinions on the parts I mentioned and for the price?

If you go with an L.A. Sleeve 240 kit, you'll be pretty well off. If you get that, get it ported by KOR or Flotek, and get the head recut, you'll be moving along pretty well. I'd estimate lower 30s on HP with a decent pipe. FMF is good. I have one o the wife's Blaster.

The stock Banshee rims are recessed about 1.5-2" more on the inside than the outside. If you install those mounted inside out, you'll gain quite a bit out back. I did it to my Banshee and it's wider than a stock YFZ.

The 400EX shock is a good upgrade from what I hear.

I wouldn't worry about the ignition system unless it needs to be fixed.

As for K&N, I hate them. I always go with UNI. If you're good with fabrication, run a tract back to a round filter and build an airbox around that. It'll give you more filter area = power.

With that much power, I'd step up to the largest front sprocket I could get my hands on. I ported my wife's Blaster, ported the reed cage, ran an FMF exhaust and a UNI filter and it won't break 55mph on 18" tires.

porting and head mod would be cheaper and better than a plain 240 kit, unless you got 240 ported...

go with UNI filter, K&N has flaws and will come apart if it ever gets wet

Porting and head mod, timing advance, bigger carb, cfm airbox, new reeds, good after market pipe to fit your porting, then suspension to go with it.. These things really wake up with some porting and head modifications matched with a good pipe.. What kind of riding does he do??

$130? Psh yeah lol.

I'd go with the 240 kit. If you get the stock cylinder ported and then need more, you'll be upgrading to an unported 240 kit and then a port job. Then, you'll have 200-300 in a cylinder that you aren't using. A stock 240 will be better than a stock 200 either way, but I do agree to get a ported 240, re-cut head, and a pipe over anything else.

Larry, are you on BansheeHQ under the same name?

To keep it simple and cheap, I'd send the cylinder and head to KOR or Flotek, but an FMF or Toomey exhaust, and get a UNI filter. As for suspension, you'll have to ask another guy; I just want horsepower.

All good upgrades mentioned. I'd throw in a pair of used works shocks. They can be found on ebay sometimes....just got to keep your eyes open for them. Maybe look into some heelguards also.....keep the boys feet attached to him!

SO I guess I should have given a little more info. Motor is all stock, we put in the K&N filter a few months ago. I put full frame, A-arm, and swing arm skid plates and nerf bars before he started riding it....... He is 14, this is his 1st quad but hes been riding it stock for a year now. We mostly do trail riding but we do some dune riding and I want to go there more. He is just a little bored with the stock power and I think he is ready for more( he rides my KFX 400 well ) so I know he can hadle more power. thanks for all the replys and advise keep them coming

Some guys say otherwise, but I hate a K&N. All my stuff runs UNI. I have a friend that's a professional Honda power-sports mechanic and they won't warranty things that have engine damage if it has a K&N.

If you want to give him more power on the cheap, I'd re-cut the head and get it ported. That'll really open it up. As stated before, I'd go with KOR or Flotek. Paired with an FMF pipe, you'll be giving that KFX a run for it's money. It'll do enough that he'll be needing a larger front sprocket.

DMC Alien exhaust $295
Uni foam Pod filter 100$
Boysens Dual stage reeds $40
Ported stock cylinder $145
Rechambered head $60
banshee rear hubs ( to run a pair of tires and rims we already have) 50$
ex 400 rear shock and new bushing 75$
sprocket and non "O" ring chain 14:40t $100

So for less $$$ ish I think I can make his blaster fast. But is there a better/ cheaper way?

I took the liberty and edited your post!

You may care to investigate getting it wider to make the extra power handleable.

Might look at better front shocks.
