the more air you can stuff in there, the bigger the bang you get when the spark fires. opening the ports allows the airflow to flow smoother, faster, and easier making more power.
well, if you cylinder is ported you only want to match that port, dont go any bigger, so when you piston is lined up with the intake port mark an outline of what to grind away, obviously you want to take the piston off for that
