I was riding today and i was in 4th gear on a straight away and i let off to slow down and downshifted and the idle got really high so i shut it off. my buddy pulled up beside me and told me there was fuel pouring out of my overflow tube on the carb so i shut the fuel off and it stopped. towed it back to my house and just rode my other quad the rest of the day. i got back to work on it and when i turn the fuel back on it starts coming out the overflow tube again when its not even running. is my float stuck? does the high idle have anything to do with the fuel problem? i didnt take the carb off yet but im going to later and want to know what to look for. also now it wont start. did i foul a plug or maybe flooded? like i said i havnt had a chance to really look at it yet just want to know what to look for.

float could be stuck, or its gotten some junk in it.

tap the float bowl with a screwdriver handle and see if it stops.

the high idle could also be on account of an air leak. if it does it when you try to start it again, you need to do a leakdown test

float stuck or bumped out of adjustment, dirt stuck in the float valve

and yes a low float level in the carb can make it run lean and surge/high idle

get her opened up, cleaned, check float adjustment and the float needles rubber tip for rips/tears

OK I didn't tear the Carb apart yet. I haven't started the blaster for 2 days now and I turned the fuel on after it being on the trailer and driving around this weekend riding my other quad other places. When I turned the fuel on no fuel came out the overflow so I figured maybe the float isn't stuck anymore and tried starting it. When it was running then fuel started pouring out the overflow? Is this still a float problem? And why didn't fuel start pouring out until I started it?

Wot he said.:) .

ok i just didnt know if the fact that fuel only came out when it was running narrowed down what i should look at and i know ive seen a thread with the specs for float adjustment in it but cant find it now.

Here is proper float level adjustment from AWK-

Just let the float tang just rest against the needle.

As stated above sometimes it is fixable by hitting the bowl of the carb with a screwdriver. This has happened to me a few times after letting it sit over winter, the fuel just gums up over time. Clean up the carb and put stabil in it if you are not gonna ride it for a while to avoid having to do it again in the future. Also when you are not gonna run it for a while, turn the gas off and let it run till it is almost out of fuel. Don't let it run completely out of fuel or you could damage the engine due to lack of oil (you can hear the difference before it runs out completely).

i took the carb apart. its perfectly clean. when i measure float adjustment what position should the float be at? als there was white powder in the carb on the side that the engine is on it rubs off fairly easily but what is it from?

Allowing fuel to dry out in the bowl, a good reason for draining the bowl when shedding for a long period.

Wait a mo, its perfectly clean yet there is white powder in the carb, can't have it both ways.

the bowl, float assembly and jets were clean just the are where it goes to the intake boot had white powder. the powder wasnt what was causing the float to stick

Aah, me now compry.:D

I believe the white powder is Aluminium Oxide, it just happens after contact with fuel and water.
