Gussets are are definitely a good idea BUT usually the gusset kits support the frame for jumping. They reinforce the corners that take vertical loads. Where your frame bent, a gusset kit wouldn't necessarily help.
You should probably get the frame to fit your future plans. If you want to run rear hydraulic brakes without a conversion, you'll need the 03+ frame. Also, the bracket that supports the hood is a little different so you'll have to have the other hood and light as well.
