Trusting someone else's work cost me a motor

First of all I take full responsibility for the blown up motor. Here's a little background. I bought a blaster over a year ago for my daughter. It was my first blaster and the guy I bought it from seemed really knowledgable. It always started right up and ran great. The bike was supposedly just rebuilt ( aren't they all ) and had a pro circuit pipe . I kept the filter clean, chain lubed, bearings greased , and trans fluid changed . Well a month ago my daughter and her friend were riding it when it quit. Well it turns out the piston broke and the skirt disappeared inside the motor. So I sent it off to Ken OConnor , and he fixed me right up !!!. I got the motor yesterday and put it in today. I decided to check the jet and it had a 230 ! So to recap I unknowingly let her ride the blaster for over a year with a pipe and only a 230 jet ! I'm such a dumbass, 5 minutes and a couple of bucks for a jet change would've prevented this tragedy. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU ! DON'T TRUST A PRIVATE SELLERS WORD, CHECK FOR YOURSELF !! To make matters worse, I learned enuff from this site to know that I should've checked the jetting so that makes me twice the dumbass. Go ahead and flame me, I deserve it but I posted this to hopefully save someone else the same headaches .

Well said. Always good to check everything out well if your buying any powersport, no matter what the seller says. Glad Ken could get it fixed up for ya, he has some nice work!

Yep this just happened to me. Bought a blaster with a toomey exhaust and today it was bogging out and I thought I blew a motor. Luckly I saved my motor and found out there was a 230 jet in the carb.

It happens bro i wouldnt be so hard on yourself we all got to learn.

and i wouldnt say dumb ass bro you do have a foxbody stang so you obviously are smart and got taste.

Now if you drove a scrapmaro or a gm/ricer id have to talk a little smack.

No sh*t a year?Id say you made out pretty damn good on that!Ive seen them go in minutes let alone a year due to lean conditions.Must have been running amsoil!

the yellow blasty my buddy just bought a month ago was supposedly just rebuilt, the kid says he couldnt get it running, and pulled the head to see what he could see
well, that cost him $200 off his $675 asking price as i jewed him down to $475
got it home and checked the jet for the fmf sst pipe/sily.............
a 230 !!!!
while i had the carb off for a cleaning, i peaked into the intake...sho-nuf
blown reed
popped a 290 jet and new reed into it, annealed the head gasket and had it running in under an hour, compression showed only 90lbs. so it has sat till we ordered rings/gaskets

friday the new top end gaskets and rings showed up,
today was the rebuild, and imagine what else we found when we pulled the cylinder..........the F'n piston was in backwards too !!!!!
but i overlooked that while i had the reedcage out,....duh
honed the cylinder/re-ringed/reassembled/leakdown tested/heat cycled
she runs like a top now !!!!

some(most) craigslist blaster sellers are complete idiots, ya just cannot trust anyone, but all in all we got a good solid bike, with all new razr's, running now, for a little over $500 total

assume the worst, and check everything !!!!!!!

2004 yamaha blastet

I've never made any mistakes *looks side to side*! At least you know what the cause is and can prevent that from happening. I'm still unsure of what happen to my son's, looks like it delveloped an air leak on the clutch side seal, sucked in a little tranny fluid, but the stator side bearing got fried, which added way to much heat, which melted the stuffer block which blew apart and took out the top end, stator, flywheel, clutch gear. :o But no case damage. I believe some of this damage may have been avoided, if my son was a bit more knowledgeable about his blasty, but it is what it is.

No bashing here, i've had my share of issues!! I:I

I'd blow the internet up if I listed all my mistakes :o , course I'm an old fart :D

Just found a roler last night might call and try to beat him up, 04 B)

I will never fault a lesson learned.
The guy might have been knowledgeable and the jetting could have been close.
This could have been a new re-build on an old bore (2nd piston and ring set).
You went a year on it lol

I don't find anyone at fault here. FWIW it was probably slapping before the blow hopefully you noticed the sound and will have a trained ear for it for ever after.

These things suck man I'm jes trying to make the best of it I:I
