Well, I traded a lawnmower for a blasty last week. The lawnmower was a spare and the guy wasn't riding the blaster. Seemed like a REALLY good deal, I actually rode the blaster before I left and it didn't run right but it did run...

I tested it when I got home and it had 115 psi of compression so I was satisfied the engine was OK and began tuning it. The e-clip on the needle was bent and the needle had been shoved up inside the slide and the TORS box idle screw had been stripped. Someone on here gave me a good deal on a mikuni carb cap and idle screw so I installed it.

As soon as the carburetor was acting correct, the engine was not. The revs were hanging BAD and when it slowed down, the piston was slapping something fierce. I rode it around the yard this morning about 9AM and decided to pull the top end off to see what all this noise was...

I found this:

Of course, HUGE air leak in the bottom end so I poured a little gas in it to see how bad and it just ran straight out through the bottom.

I yanked the bottom end out of the frame and put in the bench and under the knife.

By lunch time I had this:

and I told my wife that in order for her to be able to ride this, she needed to put in some sweat time. She cleaned the frame down while I cranked on the engine:

Before dinner I has this:

The top end on it is only .5mm oversize but it'll need boring before it can be used. I have another top end I tried to hock to rtaylor15 a while back. I've got to order another piston but I should have it in by next weekend.

I told my wife to order a piston, full gasket kit, and a uni air filter. She said "I'm glad you're made of money". I retorted back "That's the reason we have a savings account, for blastermergencies just like THIS!"

you americans are funny in ways.not you sicvic but the guy would rather push a lawnmower then ride a quad strikes my funny bone lol.
nice though

Thanks.

I forgot to say, that crank went to the shelf and the bearings that were in there went to the recycling bin. I had a spare stock crank and bearings to go in. A new set of crank seals went in it too.

I also got the heat down for the alumiweld. I had the material take immediately to the base metal and scrubbed it straight into the pores. The repair flowed like water and then I sanded it down to get it smooth (ish obviously). I then lapped both sides to make sure it was smooth before I put it all together.

Antec: it was a snapper rear engine rider lawnmower. He was push mowing before the trade.

It is silver spray paint.... "aluminum" engine enamel specifically.

I'm not polishing... but I don't want the repaired area oxidizing either so I cleaned the surface down with de-greaser until there wasn't anything on the cases and then painted it. The area inside the clutch side isn't painted... it's just shiny!

Still nice work on the repair. I know how hard alluminum can be at times especially oil soaked cases . Next time you do a complete bottom end i want to learn a few things.

nice work and sweet that you bank at the blaster federal credit union !!!!!!!

my buddy put cheap atv tires on his honda 200 utility quad and ripped an 8" hole in one trying to put it in his trailer. cheap tires= low quality

Oh yeah, I got rims and tires on the way new ITP delta steels with kenda kutter XCR's on them.... (thanks Tihs) which is why I haven't done anything with the rear tires on it yet. I also got a black seat from him in good shape too to replace what I has.

I pulled the rear plastic off (obviously) and will be pulling the front off tomorrow to be stripped. They're getting krylon fusion'd white (eeek! my wife chose the color, not me).

I also pulled the pipe and started wire brushing the rusty spots. I'm going to disassemble the silencer and repack it with steel wool. I'm going to be painting the header and stinger pipe silver too but I may actually put in the elbow grease to polish that.

It's coming together...

TROUBLE 2.0:

I took out my blaster today and it was running but wasn't running exactly right. I was running with twostroker99 and he was able to get me out of the hole (not a huge surprise considering he has a +2 swingarm and my front tires were in the air through the first two gears) but the front end didn't stay up like I expected and I wasn't able to pull back up on him like I figured I could. He was able to stay about two quad lengths out in front and I wasn't able to do anything about it. When I got home, I decided to pull it and see if something was happening and this is what I found:

Think that might explain the problem?

On a side note, the piston looks pretty good in there. It has about 50 hours on it:

A little bit of blow-by but not a bit considering the age of the piston. Remember, this engine never saw easy treatment either... it was beat the whole time I was riding it.

The head was lapped smooth before installation but I suspect that the cylinder was warped some and I didn't catch it. I slapped it on there after it was bored and didn't check it. :(

Oh, Kgibson, what did you do about your headgasket blown out? This one was blown in four of the six corners.
