I recently bought a 1988 Yamaha Blaster. We went out to ride it today and it wouldn't go into 2nd gear. All I could do was 1st and Neutral. We checked the tranny fluid and it was dry. The drain nut was loose and leaked out. We put in new oil, and still got nothing. Are we looking at putting in a new transmission? We already found a great deal on one off ebay.

Also, there is a very loud vibration type noise when the engine is moving (When reving the engine in neutral there is no noise), it almost sound as if something is getting thrown around in the engine. Did we crack off a gear?

Thanx

i doubt you broke a gear off, that would make one HELL of a noise but you never know. when you have your cases split just check everything, bearings, crank and such.

It is still ridable. You can drive around in first gear and such, but the only 2 working gears are that and neutral. I'm guessing the probablem was the guy we bought it from (We had it less than a day before it did this) didn't have any tranny oil in it and it messed it all up.

Mine sort of did the same thing except it had trouble shifting into 3rd gear. It would eventually shift but would take a while. It also made a noise when coasting in gear, sort of like something was being tossed around. I pulled the engine and split the case and a small metal ball fell out (what I thought to be part of a bearing). One problem: I could not, for the life of me, find where it came from! Nothing looked damaged so I decided to put it back together and see what happens (still in the process of reassembly). Any suggestions to where the metal ball came from? Thanks.
