Tranny oil drain plug broken..

Hey, this is my first post to this page, found alot of useful information but now i need a part.

I just bought a 1999 blaster on sunday. I got it home putted around a little bit then decided to change the transmission oil, just for the fun of it. I got is all drained and went to tighten the plug back up and it wouldnt get past hand tight. So i got to looking and there were two huge cracks in the piece of the crankcase that the plug threads into. Tried JB Weld but that didnt hold. I figure the best thing too do is replace the whole crankcase. If anybody has the part or any info it would be alot of help.

Oh my, that's a significant break. The good news is, most drain plug breaks can be repaired relatively simply using "alumiweld" which is a low temperature fluxless brazing rod. The bad news is, in order to make sure it takes the best possible and doesn't get any into the transmission without you knowing it, you need to pull the engine cases apart to use it.
 
I got an ex employer who said he would weld it no problem but i figured i would go ahead and replace it since i have to rip the whole thing apart either way.

No there is no threads left to thread into, they are all stripped.
 
i didnt do it! lol There's a gash on the screw so i assume the previous owner got turtled on a rock and cracked it and i finished the break by loosening it thrn trying to put it back on.
 
The drain plug is holding back transmission fluid only. No crankcase pressure at all so a repair is completely acceptable as long as it doesn't continue to seep.

If you know someone with a Tig welder, you can repair the broken case and reassemble. Cases are expensive if you don't absolutely have to have them, and it doesn't look like you do.
 
have it tigged i bet it would not cost much and you might not even have to take it apart. the right welder should be able to make that repair with ease
 
I would be leary of trying to repair that area of the case without taking it apart.

To get the aluminum hot enough to weld it takes ~1250°F for a minute or two. The drain plug hole is RIGHT beside the case joint and the cases halves are only sealed with a chemical sealer. With enough heat to weld the hole, you're going to burn up the case half sealant.

Plus, you're going to burn up any transmission fluid that's left in there because you can't really clean it all out without separating the halves.

I mean, it's possible that it could be repaired without splitting but I think welding it would require it be pulled apart.
 
i agree that type of break is a no brainer, if u want to do it right and not damage anything else, split em and get it fixed, looked like u snuffed that bolt pretty good too.if it were me i would split em. these are types of things that people half ass and it ends up doing more bad than good in the end...dont be that guy.
