kind of a dumb question, but if i put a used piston into a different cylinder would i still need to run heat cycles?

Yes. Even putting engine together with no new parts requires heat cycles.

IMO, swapping pistons is a bad idea. Guaranteed it won't have proper clearance. Which WILL cause failure, and cost more than doing it correctly the first time.

DO NOT buy a cheap ebay/Amazon cylinder/piston kit.
