Well, i have just finished my exams and am back home and got stuck into the blasty ASAP, the frame needs some attention so i decided to give it a touch up paint job and not to strip the entire thing as the rest of the paint is still good...

I didnt get any Before pics but by looking at my rear skid gaurd, you can get the idea of how bad it was :) yes...rocky terrain takes its course on bikes and i am going to make a skid gaurd once im done painting.

I also want to fab up a alloy airbox when im done, il see how it goes!

Here i have just started with anti corrosive etch primer, after i prepped the whole thing before hand...

cool, well today i managed to get the priming done, but had a battle with the front bumper...i once did a quick fix on it with some Rust-o-leum metallic silver aerosol and overcoated that with some clear coat of the same brand.

it worked pretty well but didnt last long. now, even though ive flatted most of it off with sandpaper, it is reacting with the laqcuer thinners based etch primer and causes a wrinkled elephant skin appearance in the corners where i couldnt get around to sanding.

so its been a lengthly process brushing thinners in the gaps to let the aerosol react and then brush it off. ive managed to get almost all of the crusty stuff off and should be able to give it a proper coat tomorrow morning.

am waiting for some cash flow to go and get some hardner i need to finish the frame with silver....should be done by saturday!

well, as you can see, the weather is a bit off today, and a tad chilly so spraying may be troublesome,

But i whipped out a old heater from about 1562 and will use it to bake the 2K paint with the hardner, help it set better!

I got the bumper more or less right, think next time im going to have it sand blasted, there is just to much paint on there, but the primer came out good.

All is primered now, busy with the A-Arms now in 2K blue

The hardner...

well, got the A-Arms done today! i would have liked to redo them in the metallic blue base coat, clear coat system i used last time, but that paint is R250 ($33) for 500ml so that was a bit unreasonable right now! so the 2k plain blue we already had from another project will do fine!

Heater to bake the paint!

Did these goodies while i was at it..

Here is a patch of the reaction i experienced between the rust-o-leum aerosol and the etching primer

can't think of a better place for "elephant skin" than in africa, LOL !!!!!

lookin good bro !!!!!

Can I ask what type of painting your doing there? I see the gun, and your going to heat cure it. But I noticed it is not powdercoating, because there is no powder. What is this called? I'd like to maybe do it to my a-arms and swingarm. Can I use a heat gun to cure the paint on too?

Thanks for any help, and this is looking pretty good so far man!!!

when cold or damp out, i routinely hit my painted parts with a quick passing of a propane torch,
blaner is heat curing the paint with the heater, the same way every pro paint shop uses infared heaters to cure paint jobs on vehicles

Nevermind that, I found a gun. Now my question is, is there a special paint that can only be heat cured? I'm thinking about making a large wooden box that my frame can fit in and putting like 4 ceramic heat lamps at the bottom, let the frame hang for a few hours.

Paint looks.good bro....n I just gotta get this off my chest....you have my most favorite avatar...^^^^

Hey Triple B, well you do not REALLY need to heat cure the paint, because you mix it with hardner, so it does cure on it own but because it was a bit nippy,i decided to use the heater to help it set harder and faster than it would on its own.

you get three kinds of Auto paint...now im no expert and in SA we probably have different names for the stuff! but this what i know:

1: "Duco" here you have your paint which you thin with Lacquer thinners and spray...nothing more, nothing less! its not very durable and is the best choice.

2: Base coat/clear coat system. Here you use a base coat of paint thinned with BASECOAT thinners. Usually used for metallic finishes, depending on dry you spray the base coat effects how the fleck/texture of the basecoat comes out. You then let it dry and overcoat with 2K clear coat, which is mixed with hardner as in the pic and thinned with 2K thinners! this stuff brings the base coat to life and gives it a protective layer.

3: 2K. This is what i used here, i have 2K blue, so i mix it with hardner and thin with 2k thinners and spray...once mixed, you cant leave the paint and go for lunch or it will congeal in the gun or tin. gotta spray it all once mixed. Its durable, easy to spray and gives good finishes. Most "plain" colour cars are sprayed with 2K paint.

BE SURE to use the correct thinners for each paint or you end up bad finishes and a crinkly finish
;

you also get different strengths of hardner, in the pic i have "Fast", you get slow, medium and express, fast is best for our DIY applications!

well today, after a trip to Port elizabeth where I study to clear out my flat on saturday, i got around to spraying the frame this sunday morning!

Bumper turned out really nice in the end:
