I continue to see numerous questions about boring cylinders on this ( and other ) forums . Seems like the answer is always the same. “ Take it to the local machine shop and have them measure the cylinder and bore it out”. I'm not implying that this is a bad answer but I do have a few questions for people that have done this.

1.What are they charging you for this service? Please don't mention names of shops. I'm just curious about the price.
2.Do they let you supply your own parts? If not, what are they charging for a top end kit? ( piston, gaskets and top end bearing).
3.What type of shops are they? Basic machine shops, Automotive shops, Dealers, motorcycle engine builders.
I see these services offered on Ebay for $139 - $179. The local automotive shop by me charges $75 for a bore and hone and will let you supply the parts. The local dealer charges $85 and you have to get parts from him. Local Harley shop charges $110 and you also have to buy from him.

Thanks

the first shop i dealt with was a straight machine shop, 40 bones cash got teh job done but you had to chamfer your own ports and whatnot when it came back the guy was too lazy. now i use a motorsports store and couldnt be happier, i can bring my own parts without hassle and the rate on the wall sign is $56/hr, but thats not what i pay but if it was it still wouldnt be too bad of a deal.

i like this thread, i wanna see prices n stuff at US, and where this all gets...

here in argentina u get a porting, bored work for about 100-200usd, witout include materials, which pistong+rings+bearings+gaskets could cost u about 300usd more... so if u have the bad luck of get the autolube broken and the piston blow this is what u pay to get it all back together running... dunno if this is what u mean by boring but is a cilinder work for sure...

anyway.... waiting to see yall answers to ken quests =)

1. Car Quest did my bored my cylinder for $35 and chamfered the ports too.
2. I supplied my own Wiseco piston
3. Automotive shop

My local dealer wanted $85 to bore it but they were going to send it out and it was going to take 2 or 3 weeks before I got it back compared to 1 day at Car Quest.

my local machine shop, a reputable auto engine builder did my first bore for $45, i supplied the parts, they informed me they usually dont do motorcycles, and it showed, when ken did my porting on a couple month old rebuild he found my cylinder was outta specs by a couple thousandths, so that bore and the $120 wiseco piston was all bunk,
then he found when my local yamaha dealer did the bottom end for me, they used a screwdriver or some other sharp object that has no business being involved in a rebuild, to remove the yamabond from the cases, and gouged the hell out of them, which caused internal fuel and airleaks, they did it for me for $110, i already had all the parts bought, more money down the drain!!!!!
there will be no-one but ken oconnor touch any thing internally on this motor ever again

i got my first bore at sturdevants machine shop for 45 bought all my own parts and just had them bore it

must have done a great goob she lasted 6 years on that topend

I went to a local auto shop, He bored it for 25 bucks, and I had him order a piston and it was like 120 for a wiesco piston kit, but I could have just taken it to him for the bore and did the rest myself and prolly saved on the kit, but its all good.

the guy i go to is a well know builder in my area does lots of work around town for all the main dealers he charges 50 for BORING includes chamfer & hone. and then i just shop around for best price on pistion kits or my parts

1. $45 for bore, hone, and ports chamfered
2. I buy my own parts, i give him the piston so he can match the bore to the piston
3. Its a local motorcycle repair shop, nice guy runs it

Local shops around Pittsburgh wanted from $50 to $100 to bore, hone,chamfer- You supply your own parts.

A Builder in Ohio by my camp wanted $325 for so called"complete rebuild", bore, cleaning inspecting of parts, New main bearings, reassembly and repaint head he supplied the piston and gasket or you could for $60 less. The crank you had to supply or it was $120 extra- Problem was he wouldn't give me any references, and his place looked like a junk yard. I believe he is also on ebay.

I used a local shop that machines stock auto repair engines for a living. He has also done alot of mach. work on engines from 2-strokes to V-8 full race engines. He is a friend and charged me 20 bucks. I supplied everything.

65-100$ here for a bore start to finish, pays for itself if you dont have the tools to measure your bore correctly...thats piston fit, chamfer, rings cut, ready to bolt on, all bike shops...supply your own parts if you can

I got my jug bored, chamfer, honed and all the melted piston cleaned outta the Exhaust port for $50 at a Local marine shop. I brought him the piston kit I had already ordered, he told me he could of got it cheaper then what I paid for from Dennis Kirk.

From what I was quoted... The local harley guy (not a shop) is 60 bucks for .60 over but he will complain because it isnt a harley.
The local motorcycle shop will do it for 80 bucks for .60 over both places you can supply your own parts

60 smackaroos to measure and bore/hone
use my own topend
build it myself

this is at a high end speedshop for muscle cars tho to, great job i dont mind paying every couple seasons

a local quad dealer was gonna charge $50 for a bore. i was going to supply gaskets piston etc. i priced out some other stuff too (porting, milling) and ended up going with flotek. now im selling the cylinder so if anyones interested hit me up lol!
