Hello all,
I'm brand new to blaster forum and really appreciate all the info posted on this site. I have 88 blaster that is getting intermittent spark. I have folllowed the trouble shooting manual posted on the site and all parameters test within tolerance. I also followed AWK's step by step guide to troubleshooting. My issue is there is spark about every third time I try to kick start it. Then it may start for a minute or so then just lose spark. I have replaced the coil(bought two just in case), cleaned all electrical connections, and tested all devices for tolerance. I just can't seem to figure it out. Any help or suggestions appreciated!!! I really want to get my blaster running. Damn I miss the fun on it.X(:(

sounds like the cdi.. i had the same issue. if you cann find someone local to let you swap them out thats an easy way to check it.. let us know what you find.

I think Surfrjag is right. It sounds like the CDI box is no good. Be sure the TORS system has been disconnected, too. It can act up and cause the problems you are describing. There are plenty of threads on here which discuss the TORS system, if you need more info.

The only other thing that could be causing your problem that you may not have thought to check is a damaged kill switch. The switch could be intermittently grounding-out the spark while trying to get the engine to start. Unhook both the handlebar and keyed kill switches (if used) and try the spark test again. If it fires normally, you've got a bad switch.

Hey all, thanks for the look. So I have tested the CID box and it is within the tolerance listed in the manual from the pick up coil and source coil. Is the CID box tested separately? Thanks for the help.

the cdi box cannot be tested, just replaced with a known working one for testing

So I have bought a CID box on eBay and replaced the old one and it is doing the same thing. It will start and run for maybe 15 seconds, then try to kick it over and it will fire maybe every third time. At this point I have replaced the coil and CID box. I have disconnected the main key switch and the kill switch and still the same thing happens. Some mention a Thor (something with the brake) , but I don't think my machine has that, 1988 model. I appreciate all your help and ideas because I am frustrated at this point. Thanks to whoever posted the troubleshooting manual, I think it was awk.

After all that you have done and you are still getting intermittent spark I would look at the trigger/pickup.

Awk and I diddly. Thanks for the suggestions!! It was the stator. Replaced with working one and kicked over the first try. Thanks a million for he help.. I'm hooked on blaster forum now!!!

Cheers!!!!
