Both front and back come off when you compress them. The washer part on top has a slot it goes through when compressed. Its def easier than car struts on the stock shocks anyway.

once you have the spring off, please putthe shock back on the bike. with the bike on a stand, measure from the ground to the spindle, then pull up the a=arm up intill the shock is fully squished and measure again, subtract the smaller number from the bigger number and please pm me with it. thanks!! (this tells you how much wheel travel you have..I bet it's no were near the 7" yamaha claims.
