Is it possible to extend the stock stem? I want to cut it and weld a piece of pipe in then another longer pipe to weld over the top of the other one for reinforcement. Would this work? How much could I extend it and still have the cables and wires reach? I was thinking 2"?

remember that when you extend the steering, effectively you are bringing the bars closer to your riding/seating postion, so you going to end up with tucked in elbows. this is because of the angle that the stem sits at. A little is good and helps with riding technique but bear it mind and factor this into your designing.

i've extended one for my buddies last build, mainly because the stem that came on the roller was bent at the top, i had one with a bad tie rod hole on the flag, we coulped it together with 1/2" black iron pipe (maybe it was 3/4" ??)
did this about 10-12 inches above the flag,
works good and didn't move the bars back too far at the 2 inches longer we made it

ya i made mine to +3 inch, about as far as you would want to go before the wireing and cables start gettin tight

After riding Triplecrown's Blaster I was convinced (and I am old and don't convince easy). 3" extension was an excellent height
for me at 5'11" and he is 3-4" taller than me. Quick easy mod, all the wires and cables still work. Good idea, Thanks!
We did it pretty much like this thread and pictures:

Our joint was a bit higher to hide it under the plastics and we put 3" of tube up into the stem top and bottom,
with a MIG weld to hold it. I have no fear of the strength. MUCH more comfortable ride now.
