does taking off the airbox lid make any improvments in the sound? like better sounding or worse?
also does the sound degrade after so many years on a fmf pipe and silencer?

You'll get more carb noise from taking off the airbox lid. But, you have to rejet when you do. At least one size, maybe 2 depending.
As far as exhaust, when was the last time you checked it for leaks and when did you service/re pack the silencer? I do mine ever 50 hrs or once every 2 months. Depending how soaked it looks too.

As the packing in the muffler gets soaked in oil, it looses its ability to asorb sound.

The older the packing is, the louder the noise becomes.

You should not loose any power.
