Signs of a bad crank seal?

Really not too sure whats wrong, but Im thinking its the crank seal, pulled off the top end and looked inside and there was oil at the top, not sure if thats normal. It backfires and pops and can't even get it out of first with out it stalling. White smoke coming from the exhaust until it warms up but when I go to give it gas it will pop and backfire and the smoke comes out and it will usually die. Are these signs of a bad crank seal, and what are the usual signs.. If not what the hell is wrong??

sure does sound like the clutch side crank seal

Do you have to split the cases to change it?

no take the clutch cover off and its behind the crank gear

if its burning clutch oil....yea that will cause lots of probs
