I read on another thread someone suggesting advancing the timing 4 degrees. This looked really easy to do in the link it showed. My question is should i do this to my quad. Will it give morepower on the top end but kill the bottom end? Will i hafto run a colder plug And or race gas or higher octane gas? This what i know is done to my quad : 240 kit , v-force reeds, 34mm carb and fmf fatty . I plan on dragging this quad.

here is the link on how to do it: http://www.blasterforum.com/do-yourself-20/diy-4-degree-timing-advance-pics-2417/

I do believe with the mods you already have you would notice an improvement from timing advance. I think it has to do with throttle response but either way I woulddo it as most of the drag quads I have read about are doing it.

A timing advance improves power all the way through the power range. More so on the bottom to mid but the top end see's a small amount. It is well worth the 30 minute investment in time.

You will get a bottom end boost from this mod nothing on top really.
Timing on a smoker is a rob peter to pay paul deal.
More timing gives a better bottom but takes away the top and vice versa.
+4 is a good compromise, you get more low rpm torque and the take away from the top is not that noticeable.
Now if you were runnin race gas that burns slower then regular gas you could afford to get even more extreme like +8-+10 advance.
At those levels the boost at the bottom will be pretty noticeable and so will be less over rev on the topend of the powerband.

Ok sounds good. I will do it this week if i dont have to work late. I will let everyone know how it is if i do it. Thanks everyone

i agree with paulieb, its a dangerous way of achieving power, be careful and do it carefully or you will be buying a new piston soon, make sure your jetting is accurate

Ok so im confused. From my previous experience working on race car engines. When you advance the timing you are giving up a lil on the bottom but makes up on the top end. Any yes requiring higher octane fuel so it doesnt ping. Are atvs different ? Can someone please clear this up for me?

Really isn't any difference. From my experience with an old sb chevy advacing increases rpm even at idle, but with both mechanical and vacume advance had to watch for pinging. A few * was alright. The cdi on a blaster advances till upper midrange then starts backing it off, right about where the stock pipe starts working the best. I think thats why it adds on the bottom & mid but not top. Don't know if it continues to retard the higher it spins, as most all A M pipes generate max power at a higher rpm than stock.
I have had no problems running premium with +4, Fat Bastard and porting.

2 strokes are the opposite of 4 strokes when it comes to timing.
