Shift Cam and Stopper Lever Problem

Alright so I'm trying to install the stopper lever that holds the shift cam in place and it sound like an easy process, but the first time I put the stopper lever spring on I broke the shoulder bolt (that holds the stopper lever and spring) off in the case, got it out finally, and had to order a new bolt. Has anyone put a stopper lever on and is there a trick or special process to doing it, because right now its just seems like I'm doing something wrong obviously.

When I do it I just thread it in a little bit (the bolt about 1/3 of the way in) then I use a pair needle nose pliers and push the stopper in place on the "star" wheel then I use a screwdriver to push the spring in place on the case. Once its in place I thread the bolt the rest of the way into the case. I hope this helps.
