Mine isn't feeling well again. :-/ It was running fine for 2 or 3 rides about an hour each. It started backfiring pretty bad. It kickstarts just fine but now it will backfire a few times, bog down and stall out on me. New plug, good compression, good spark, new +2 timing key and reeds are good. I shined a light in the flywheel and it looks like the key is still good. I don't have a puller to get the flywheel off. My plugs are coming out wet and dark. Anyone have any ideas? And is it possible for the key to be sheared and still see it on the shaft through the little hole in the flywheel?

when that happened to me, i had the same exact problem. My reeds were warped. Check your reeds and see if either of the flap is opened just a tiny bit. That caused mine to run and just shut off, and then the plug would be wet and black, then it would run again until the spark becomes wet again.

I bet that's it. I've had the reed cage out several times this week and I know for sure that the right flap on both sides is open just a hair. Probably not even the width of a razor blade but raised up a tiny bit.

deff check your reeds sounds like thats your prob.....you might be able to get by with flipping them till you get new ones unless one is chiped or cracked

They aren't chipped or cracked. In pretty good shape. I wasn't sure if I could flip them since the back side looked like it had a little different texture around the edges and the front is completely smooth. Thanks yb. +1 rep to you and alpine. Didn't know if that TINY gap could make a difference Out to the garage...again. lol Good thing I like fixin stuff. Can't wait to get back to work in April, more than enough money to treat my girl to all the shiny new things she's been askin for, including reeds. :D

No dice on the reeds. I think flipping them did work but it won't start now. My plugs are in bad shape. I think a new plug is in order and I'm sure it will start right up. Too cold out there now. I'm calling it a night.

next time you have an extra 5 bucks I would order a factory woodruff key and do the stator plate mod instead for timing, those offset keys look like a weak link to me

+1 on the reeds they must lay flat

does it seem to backfire in the pipe or in the carb?

I already got the factory key. I just need to install it. The +2 one went in rough and REALLY tight. It was a Vito's part so I figured it was good but not pleased with it. I can't get my flywheel back off now cuz I don't have the puller. lol The reeds are warped too. I flipped them and one side layed flat and the other one still has one flap that just won't sit flat.

You can get the puller from eBay or any online parts dealer. I use RJATV myself and I get my parts next day if they are in stock.

A flywheel puller tool is one of the tools you have to have.

Yeah, I found that out the hard way. I fabbed one up to get it off the first time and it worked beautifully but I broke it this time around. Sometimes you just need to have that specialty tool. :(
