Replaced the starter spring already and it broke again. Any ideas why?

Just replaced starter spring and it broke again after about 20 kicks. I'm pretty sure I had both ends of the spring in the holes. Seemed kinda loose though. Is there a washer that goes on in between the case and the spring?

Find a parts diagram and look
Also look in repair manual to ensure proper installation

Number 4 sure looks like a washer to me
