Okay my father and I are working on the rear brakes for a stock '91 blaster.

We opened the caliper once before and my father took out four 2-2.5mm pins and the brakes worked for a while.

We are revisiting this problem. We got a shorty cable and brake pads. And we are curious of one thing.

What are those four pins and are they important/vital to the brakes?
Should we put them back in? And if so where do they go???

thanks rhyno

I (his father added):

They look almost like needle bearings but I can't break down the guts and I can't see a race where they would go.

Im pretty sure i know what your talking about. There are no pins holding the caliper together. The caliper is pretty simple design. When i cracked mine open one time i didnt know what they were, but as you said yes that would be a few of the needles from the bearing.

Ahh, I thought as much. I actually saw them stuck in grease between the 2 washer tyoe pieces and saved them as we disassembled the unit.

Maybe we should be looking into replacing the unit? Seems nobody wants the old style so perhaps we can locate an inexpensive replacement....

We did thoroughly clean and carefully reassembled the caliper with the new shorty cable installed. We will be installing it tonight and trying it out. Hopefully they will work temporarily until I can locate a replacement.

It all depends on you much time your willing to spend on the brakes. Some people are lazy and dont want to deal with the hassle so they switch to hydros. You can fine tune your rear brakes to work just as good as hyrdros. On my blaster my front cable brakes worked just as good as hydro fronts.
