My dad has a Honda C70 scooter that he quite frankly bought for no reason. He wants to sell it, I want to ride it(130mpg sounds great right now). At any rate, I can't really get much approval to tear the engine apart, but I might do it anyways one weekend when he isn't around because I'm sure as a 1983 model it could use a good cleaning and valve adjustments.
The problem?
Well it used to run fairly well. It's only got about 3000 miles on it since 1983. It's a 70cc air cooled 4 stroke and I remember it running alright, but he got it out after it was sitting for a year and it runs like sh*t now. It won't idle, and when you ride it, it will only run under the scenario that you have the choke out....think of a 2 stroke with an air leak and it's similar. At first, I thought it might have just been a gummed up carb, so I cleaned it, but it didn't help much. So now, I'm beginning to wonder what the deal is since it ran fine, sat for a year, than ran like crap. For one, the gas tank was rusty.....I found this out myself and immediately stopped it from doing it any longer by cleaning the tank out, but since the carb doesn't SEEM to be the issue, I'm beginning to think the engine is having an issue of some sort. I was wondering if any of you guys had any ideas what it might be. CDI's tend to be an issue with these bikes, but I'm leaning more towards the idea that he ran it with a rusty gas tank and the rust ate up the intake valves and they aren't seating all the way causing an "air leak". I haven't changed the plug yet....probably the same one from 83 for all I know. I will have to change that sometime.
