I was recently given a blaster. I am not sure on the year of it, but it has a white frame, white plastics, red fuel tank cover and red seat. I got it out of a barn where it had been sitting for 6 years. I got it to run after cleaning the carb (jets were completely clogged) and putting some new fuel in it, and putting a new coil on it, but i cant seem to get it to run very well.

My problem with it is that, it will run for 5 or less minutes then die, then if I let it sit for a few minutes and choke it it will start, only to run for a few minutes and the process just seems to repeat itself. I really like this blaster it is alot of fun but it sucks only being able to run it for 5 minutes at a time. Where should I start my trouble shooting? Also is there any good parts source, since my nearest Yamaha dealer doesn't stock parts for this plus they are 45 minutes away!

Thanks so much!

Just thought I would mention that it also seems to backfire alot. And sometimes, but not always, a bear to start.

I seem to think that after looking at alot of other threads on this forumn that the piston is the problem. How do I check this and what will it cost me to fix it?

here and ebay for parts
and that 5 minute limit sounds like the floats sticking, so you only get one fuel bowl full of riding in till it runs out of fuel, pull and completely disassemble that carb again, including the floats and float valve, also check the flow from the tank, by opening the petcock while holding the line over a can or sumthin, possibly clogged petcock screens too ???
that can be pulled from the tank and checked/cleaned also

BTW.... is the oil injection still on it ????
or are you mixing the fuel/oil at 32:1 like most of us have ????

do a compression check to see what that is, it'll tell you alot about whats goin on in there, we also like to do leakdown tests to check for air leaks, which will lean it out and fry the piston

You need to do a compression check. Awk touched all bases. Sounds like carb problems.

ok sounds good I will Check compression and rebuild the carb I never thought of the idea of the float sticking and limiting fuel. I have already done a leak down test and it was fine and I unhooked the oil mix and run 32:1. Although I am new to this forum I have had the blaster for 2 weeks and had been doing alot of searchin around hear and reading to fix all the other problems this thing had which is alot.

should I buy a rebuild kit for the carb?

what is proper compression

thanks for all the responses!

120 is good, but you can get away with anywhere near that, getting close to 100 is time for at least a hone and rings

and yaeh i'd get a carb kit, the moose kit i got from ebay for under $20, it includes the "$50 float valve" too,

Just unhooking the oil injection won't do it. You have to remove the line feeding into he carb and cap it.

Yes I know I unhooked it and capped it. haha

thanks to everyone I am gonna buy the moose carb kit and hopefully test the compression within the next few days if get time.

when i bought my carb rebuild kit i didnt get a moose. i just got ebay special. just type in yamaha blaster carb and go by cheapest first and you should find one.
