Hey Guys

Like I said in my intro I am new to blasters. I have always had the 4 strokes. I bought this 97 blaster for my son we love it so far. I am wondering though if it is running right. It starts 1st kick and runs great never stalls but everyone talks about these being wheelie machines. I can't even get the front tires to come up and I feel like there is no real pull or powerband when going though the gears. My younger brother has a 300ex and I was riding with him the other day and he could pull away from me with ease. Reading online people walk the 300ex with a stock blaster all the time. Do you think something could be wrong with my bike or for stock is this the type of power it should have? I did a leak down test everything is good there.

I just bought a fmf fatty with power core 2 will add it and rejet when it comes in but for now was wondering if power wise I am where I should be or should I be able to pull the front up easy and pull on the younger brothers 300ex.

Thanks for the info guys

sounds like it's lacking some power.
check compression, clean carb and airfilter, check/set float heights, adjust airscrew for high idle, plug chop main jetting
some of those have threads here......

Thanks for the reply will start by checking compression. I read on here it should be between 110 and 130. I will report back tomorrow after work.

The stock 15-17hp engine is not really renowned as being a wheelie puller especially if you have ridden 4 pokes your whole life.

You really have to get the revs up about 7000 or more before it settles into the power band on a stock pipe.

Fitting the FMF, removing the air box lid and using an aftermarket filter, will have that 300ex in the rear view mirror at all times.

If the compression is not 100 or more it should be rectified.

When my four stroke friends ride the Blaster they never get on the pipe. They are so used to there power being down low with all the torque of a four stroke. When they come back looking like the blaster makes no power, I tell them to stay in the gears longer and let it rev out, that is were our power is. Let it scream and hang on.

This might be the problem also I might not be

Ok did a compression test compression is 136 is that good? The guy I bought it from just put a top end in like 3 hours on it. I did not get to try running it harder because after I took the plug out to do the compression test when I put the plug back in the bike was running terrible popping and bogging. Think by taking out the plug and whipping it off I fowled it out will get a new plug in the am. The plug did seem a little rich but not bad I think it is from my son putting around and not really getting it reved up.

136 psi. is great compression for a stock cylinder/head.
my completely stock '96 would pull nice 3rd gear wheelies at the right speed and rpm's.
try a new plug and report back

One of my blaster is bone stock, and i can get the front end up through 3rd. Just make sure your carb is clean, its not running to rich or to lean, and you have good compression.

I know from reading on here when my fmf pipe comes in I need to change the main jet to a 260. Can I just put the 260 main in or do I need to change other things. I found a 260 jet for like $9 or do I need the whole fmf powerup kit for like $50?

Do not buy a jet kit, unless the jets range from #260 to #320

If you have any other mods the following may assist, at sea level, cold temps require richer settings.

FMF only = #260 main jet.
Aftermarket air cleaner + 1 or 2 size larger.
Air box lid off +2
32:1 pre mix +1
Needle in the middle slot.
32.5 pilot jet
Plug chop to confirm, as temperature, elevation and humidity come into the equasion

Does anyone have a 260 laying around. My local dealer does not have them and ebay I have only found a 5 pack. Let me know a price and I will paypal you for it.

Ok you guys were 100% correct I was riding like a 4 stroke. Once I let it rev higher the power really kicked in. I did not beat the 300ex but was side by side. The piece of plastic between the pipe and silence that has to clamps broke. I looked online and found on on e bay for like $12. After looking at it it looks like 1in heater hose does anyone know if that will work to fix it?

gotta stay "on the pipe" !

yes, 1" heater hose has worked
i'd take the silencer to the autoparts store to get a nice tight fitting piece of hose
