Porting and polishing

if you send it to the right person you can pretty much double your hp with the right suporting mods imo yes it is worth it taking the top end apart is not that hard

exactly........a good port will nearly double your horsepower, especially when you add the supporting mods.

the blaster leaves a lot on the table with the porting and ESPECIALLY the head design. if you are looking for something really easy without getting the top end all the way off, send your head out to be redesigned

does porting and polishing help that much?
Is it worth taking off the the top end just for that?

Thanks a lot. I wish I knew this 4 months ago. I just did a rebuild on my top end.

A lot of times, porters don't need to bore up to the next size. They just need to hone out the cylinder and you are good to go. All you would need to do is buy a top end gasket set. If you haven't done it before, a Clymer manual supplies all you need in terms of information on how to take the top end apart and torque specs for the top end.

I installed the top end this last time.
Besides just getting more hp what all does it help with?
What gives you the hp?
Can it be done at home or should I have some one do it,
and if so how much does that run?

helps air flow through the ports as there are many in the 2stroke. sending it off would be the best bet usually cost around 150-200 and i would recomend getting the head modified also another 50-60. you will love the way it runs afterwards.. your arms will be 2 inches longer after riding it the first time!!

Porting depends on what type of port job you go for. In general, it adds about the same upgrade in performance or a tad more as adding a pipe to a stock bike does. The intake and exhaust ports remove the casting flaws from the manufacturer....many times the exhaust port exit will be polished in order to prevent carbon build up or a few others have unique port exist mods like mine. Either way, the intake port is enlarged and the bridge is typically made smaller and angled off to enhance air flow into the engine. Depending on the porter and port choice, some will cut boost ports in as well to add to it. The transfer ports are also cleaned up from casting flaws, enlarged slightly and sharped on the ends for more efficient transfer of air/fuel flow. Exhaust port is also enlarged/altered.

I generally look at HP changes as this....although it ALWAYS varies with setup and what you are doing and these are just BALLPARK numbers.
Stock blaster: 20RWHP
Piped/Air Filter blaster: 25-7RWHP
Ported/Above mods/larger carb: 31-38RWHP.......larger variation is dependent on carb size and how aggressive porting is from simple clean up of casting flaws to full on drag porting on a 35-36mm carb.

I think that doing your own port work is kinda scary at first. I started by just cleaning up the castings and makin it flow better. then i watched a video of a ported blaster tearin sh*t up and thought to my self " well i have 1 extra jug and they dont cost much anyway so why not do the damn thing!!!" First i found some pics of someone elses work and tryed to make mine look similar. Then I read macdizzy's page on it and discovered i was already doing what he was talkin about. My first 2 serious port jobs i spent hours upon hours grinding /drilling and smoothing everything. The scariest parts to do are the boysen/ boostports in the intake and then the triple exhaust ports are always intimidating. My impression after the first time i rode with triple ports was like night and day. F-IN AWSEOME!!!! This time i got a lil more technical than just eyeballin it. If you print off a degree wheel and put it on the flywheel u can check your port timing and use a sharpie to outline what to do. flotek emailed me some basic pointers and it took alot of guess work out of it. Sure ive invested maybe $100+ in tools to do it but ive been able to port about 4 top ends and am on number 5. Infact just tonight i used the same tools to mod my intake to accept cr125 reeds ($25) that spank all them vf3's !! I wouldnt recommend it for everyone but if u've got some time and balls DO IT!!!!!

I'm still having problems trying to finish porting and polishing....Hey super noober what foot rest are those on your bike .... pretty cool.... My exhaust is 90% done few hard spots need to finish polishing, my intake is too smooth and I don't know what sand paper to just to rough it up and my head has some tiny pits I want to sand out but I can't sand to much.I'm using 100 grit lightly to remove some.Even tho I can't do to much it seems about right if I clean all the factory casting flaws on the bottom and polish the exhaust and clean the intake to smooth that a little off the head might be what I need to complete all the porting and polishing...........Plus I have a E3 spark plug to do the rest...lol
