Yes the ports in the piston go to the intake side if you look they match the intake ports on the cylinder. There should be an arrow on the top of the piston. Which should point to the exhaust port. Front of the motor.

when i got my quad it wasnt running very well, the guy i got it from said the engine was just rebuilt
but it wouldnt rev very high or do more than 15 mph
when i took the reed out i didnt see the ports so i took the head off and turned the piston the right way but now it wont start at all
(no extra parts)lol
any ideas
 
Well once the gaskets are torqued the get flattend out. So you would have to torque them a little tighter to get the to seat again or it can cause an air leak. Did you put the head gasket on right with the point part facing to the front of the motor like the piston also some head gaskets have up stamped on them for that side to go up.
